New Handy Sniper Rifle! Kinda long post..
« on: November 02, 2008, 05:45:11 PM »
You got that new 24" Fluted Ultra barrel, you grabbed
a decent case for all your doo dad's and you promtly
march into Gander and take over there counter repair
area in there gun shop ;) The guy says: "can we help
you?". You respond: "No thanks I want to try on some
scope rings and some of your scopes". He is quiet because
your buying their products. An hour later after opening
and trying out several mounts and scopes you leave with
a 4-16x50 scope and some Weaver rings, 1/16" off barrel.

Thats all good but we know even a good grouping gun
bone stock will group better getting the trigger pull down
below 3#, so lets take that unfired new gun apart!

Little painters tape will save that finish even tho this gun
will be getting a home brew custom Realtree finish :)
Now spill out all those pesky springs and rough finished
iron parts...most everything has to go back in!

A couple hours of polishing everything down to the pivot
pins, honing and polishing the trigger, shiny and smooth
we trim the trigger spring and trial fit several times until
we hit under #3 pull, it will drop more on its own.

She fires smoother during dry fit than new, no creep as well!

Now lets free float that barrel, hand polished a Neoprene
washer until the barrel "just" floats but supported equaly,
we're going for sub MOA groups and want to shoot crows
out at 300 yards!

20mn of polishing the inside of the barrel before the first
shot is fired, another hour of bedding the rail and lapping
the scope mounts in their final position...tired yet?

Not done yet we need to go fire a bunch of different weight
bullets to see what groups the best, cleaning the barrel
several times along the way during breakin...gotta love a
new gun! Not pictured is the cutting and rewelding of the
trigger or trigger spur to clear the scope, cant have that
scope too close to the barrel :shades Chances are your gun
was gonna group good anyway but doing these steps
before you even fire it will save re-zeroing in you gun after
or possibly not accurizing it anyway right? Next chapter:
Painting your brand new gun with flat spray paint!

Looks great , what scope did you end up with ? Thanks for the pic of the forend , i've got a survivor in .308 and don't care much for the flimsy forend , I may have to upgrade to the varmint forend !

.223, that would be a good point after my page long ramble!

I'm not gonna say the name of the scope, has a bad rep but
the one I had for my son has stayed zeroed on a small center
fire (rhymes with barfska). I could'nt find my favorite Mueller
tac 4-16x50 localy, this is externaly the same in case I need
to orderd another Mueller. (scope letters wear Sharpie Black!)

I like the varmint fore end. Im staying away from reliefing the
back of it where it meets the action because I dont think its
actualy making any contact (can still wiggle the rear/fore with
the front totaly free floating).

Hoping to do my indoor gun range sighting in tonight (live in
town) and if that goes well I'll get onto painting it this week.

Thanks for the post. I like to tinker but only seem to have time to read about it for the moment.

Hope it shoots well for you.

Out of interest what were you using to polish the trigger mechanism?

Out of interest what were you using to polish the trigger mechanism?

The steel used on firearms is a lot harder than the parts I make from scratch
when building race cars: http://www.extremepsi.org/gallery/albums/Russ-Junk/ColtMotor08.thumb.jpg

So I started with valve lapping compound and a dremel, followed up by
aluminum polish and then a cotton buff wheel. This is only the second
Handi trigger job I've done, with the splined pins shiny I realy dont
think there is much gained by polishing the inside bore of the hammer where
the two meet, trigger is incredibly smooth. Its no Anschutz trigger but side
by side with my pricey gun I actualy like it more :)
