30-30 vs 6.8spc for deer
« on: November 01, 2008, 04:26:43 AM »
i want some feedback ,i want to order a contender barrel 14inches for deer hunting,i want to start reloading, but currently not set up so i would like to shoot something that i can get factory ammo for, i  like the potential of the 30 -30 but factory ammo is not that impressive, there is better factory ammo options for the 6.8. in my opinion, so here's where i need some other opinions . also want to be able to make 175 yard shots, so let me know if theres a better round out there that i mite not be aware of

I will be using the 6.8 for deer season in WI late November. I will give some performance results at that time.

When I first got into contenders my first barrel was a 30-30. I found with 150 grn nosler bal tips I could get 2300+ fps with good accuracy and a long case life. 200 yds shots were not a problem as long as I had a good rest. The bal tip opened nicely. Can't say anything beyond 200 yrds since I never took a shot longer than 200 yrds. I got less than 50 fps more with the 125 grn bullets so I stuck with the 150's. I don't have any experience with the other cal.

Yup, I think the .30-30 will do you just fine with 150 grain Nosler BT's.  That's what I am using this season.  Or - you could order a .30-30 AI and still use factory loads in a pinch.
