Handi Rifle For Predators
« on: November 03, 2008, 08:24:21 AM »
I just bought a .223 heavy barreled handi rifle and was wondering if anyone has any tricks or tips to improve it at home.

.223 is good for hunting predators if you chose the right bullet.  If you don't care about the fur any bullet that flys straight is good.  If you want the fur need to find a non expanding bullet, like the Barnes solid.  Then don't hit big bones.  Unless foxes are a long way out, even the solid will be very destructive on them.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I plan on hunting predators with this gun with my friend who is shooting a .204.  What does anyone think of the .204 vs. the .223 for predator hunting?

I shoot a heavy barrel .223, and I havent done anything to it at all.  I reccommend handloading if you don't already.  With handloading, its cheaper and easier to find a combination that works well in your rifle. as far as the .204 goes, a lot of people will swear by it, but I think you'll see very similar results with it and the .223.

.204 has a better BC on bullets of the same weight than the .223 so at longer ranges you'll should see some gains with the .204, longer bullets fly better, but up close say within about 200 yards I don't think you would see much of a diffrence.  >223 are more abundant and cheaper to shoot.

223 with 90 grain Bergers is pretty legit at long range...

Prairie dog hunters have it all wrong, a 80 grain Berger will stabilize from a Ar-15, and at 3000 fps still has almost 800 ft lbs at 500 yards, and well over 300 at 1k.  Pretty much doubles the range of the 223!

Exactly!  I could say I have dropped a few man-sized targets at 550-600m with 62gr FMJ out of a 14.5" 1:7 M4 but that is apples to oranges.  ;D  I have a firm belief that has been proven time and again, the shooter makes the rifle.

While the .223 and .204 might not be comparable, the .204 is definitely not even in the same class as the .22-250.

I bought the Handi .22-250 Bull synthetic based on ballistics over the .204 and the .223.  I'm not crazy over it yet.  I'm still working out accuracy issues, although I admit I haven't given it enough time and attention.  So, at this point let's say the fault isn't the rifle or the scope......It's just old lazy bones.  The funny thing is windage is perfect, I'm not figuring out elevation.  You'd think that would be easy in a flat shooter.  I can hit about anything with the "rainbow gun", the .45-70 and haven't doped out the little .22.  If this #@$%*&^%$ wind ever lays down for an hour, pehaps I will.
