308 cal 303
« on: November 25, 2008, 06:18:41 PM »
I'm have been toying with the idea of a 303 Brit with a 308 bore for an Encore.  I read about it somewhere on a TC related web site but can't find much on it now.

I seem to remember reading that some of the commercial die manufacturers offer dies to do this.  Does anyone make these barrels as a matter of course?  Any opinions about the idea?

Thanks
Rob

My opinion?  It's the worst of all worlds.

If you ever want to sell your barrel, no one will want to buy it.  It's not exactly a wildcat but then it is.  What cartridge designation will be on your barrel?  If someone else ever gets the barrel will they try to shoot 0.311 diameter bullets in it and will it cause problems?  In addition I can't think of any type of improved performance or function that can't be obtained easier with a standard factory load but, whatever floats your boat.

I didn't think of that.  Good point.  My reason for thinking about it was the better selection of 308 bullets and I just like the old 303.

You've talked me out of it.

Thanks

Have used a 303 British and like is very much but do'nt care for what is suggested and that's only my opinion. It could be done but why? What is special about the 308 case? Why not use a standard 303 Brit or 30/40 Krag? Both are near the 308. Or even use the 308.
