I own two Mini-14s, both are Ranch Rifles. I also own an Untra in .223. One of the Minis is a Stainless Steel model and is only about four years old. It does not shoot near as well as the older one, only good out to about 150 yards.. The older one is one of the original models made back in the mid 80s. The older one is very accurate, and great out to 400 yards, for shooting predators. I carry it on the handle bars of my Snowmachine. The Ultra is the gun I use when calling from a stand. It is good on out to 500 yards, better than the Mini-14, and seems to hit harder at longer ranges. While I can hit on out at longer ranges with the Ultra, (600 and 700 yards) the bullet looses too much velocity. For wolves I try and limit my shots to under 300 yards with a .223. I am wanting to work up some loads for the ultra using some heavier bullets so I can extend my effective range. But so far I have not had the time to do this tedious task.
The Mini-14 shoots the 52gr bullets well, but will not shoot heavier bullets. The same loads I shoot in the Mini shoots well in the Ultra so that is what I have been using. I want to use 70 or 80 grain bullets. Not sure how the Ultra will shoot them.
When calling I like to have the Mini lying beside me, just in case I have multiple critters come in.
