Value of my contender package?
« on: November 05, 2008, 05:27:36 PM »
I'm considering trading off my contender and 3 barrels for a rifle I'm itching for and I'm wondering what would be a good value for what I have.

Contender frame (old style) in good shape. with the following barrels and scopes.

14" match 22lr SS with 1.5-4x tasco scope
14" AA 7x30 waters machined in brake with silver Bushnell 2-6 trophy in Redfield 3 ring base.
14" rechambered 358 JDJ, blue, magnaported with TSOB base 4 rings, Bushnell 3200 2-6x FF scope.
T/C hard case.

I'm not looking to sell or trade here, just looking for opinions of what would be a fair value for what I have.

Thanks

I've edited my post to clarify that I am only looking for opinions of the value of the items I currently have.

Thanks

Since so far no one has attempted to respond to your actual question I will here:

Contender frame (old style) in good shape. with the following barrels and scopes.

Not sure just how "old style" you mean but I'm gonna assume just pre G2 for now. Frames generally will net you from $150-$200 depending on condition and just what it really is. SS is worth more than blue those after I think it is 195,000 SN are worth more than older unless the older is in collector shape.

14" match 22lr SS with 1.5-4x tasco scope

Such barrels are worth from $150-$175 generally. The scope if a Tasco World Class is highly desireable to some but worthless to others. I happen to like them. Still they only sold for $125 new and aren't worth more than $50 used and even then only to someone who really likes them. If it's not the WC I'd call it worthless also.

14" AA 7x30 waters machined in brake with silver Bushnell 2-6 trophy in Redfield 3 ring base.

Generally AA barrels are too desired by most but then some prefer them. Has it been opened up to work with blue/SS frames? If so the folks who want them on their AA frames wouldn't want it and frankly the rest of the TC folks mostly don't care for them. I'd rate it at around $125 if you're lucky. The scope is worth about $100 max as they are only about $160 new. Rings and bases really add no value just kinda help to swing a deal for you at the value of the barrel/scope.

14" rechambered 358 JDJ, blue, magnaported with TSOB base 4 rings, Bushnell 3200 2-6x FF scope.

The magnaporting helps or hurts depending on who is looking at it. Mostly price wise it's a wash. Such barrels are typically worth about same as the first one in the $150-$175 range. Dunno what the FF means but if that silly huge reticle with the lighting feature I for one would rate it as worth nothing. Still for someone who is willing to use it they go around $150 but someone is blowing them out new in box at that price I think as that feature is mostly hated by all.

T/C hard case.

Hard to say without a photo to know just what you have. Perhaps $25-$30 or perhaps less depending on what it is.

Thanks GB, that's what I was looking for.
The frame is pre 195,000 so it is the harder to open front trigger release pivot so is probably worth the lower side of the going rate. The tasco is a world class which like you said may mean something to someone and may not. But at any rate if the Gunshop doesn't get me to where I want I can always say no thanks.

Thanks again GB.

The .358 JDJ barrel would probably be more desirable if it included brass, dies etc. It would be to me.

When I am looking at Contenders, here is what catches my eye:

frame and one barrel : 10" or 14" with stock sights....$250 or close there abouts.
Barrels - Stock.... $150 and less
Barrels - bare.......$140 and less
Barrels with scopes......$150 - $200 unless top end Leupold, Burris, or similar scope.
Custom or aftermarket barrels with dies and brass $175 - $200 and up depending on the extras.

Any custom or aftermarket barrel selling for near value is suspicious.  Why would someone sell a new XYZ barrel for $20 less than new....unless it wouldn't shoot, or dies cost $100 or more, or ....or......I just order a new one if I want one and avoid the endless negative possibilities.

Any custom or aftermarket barrel selling with dies, brass, load information are open to discussion and negotiation.  I have several plain jane barrels that I have purchased for $300+ because of what they were and the info they came with.  Two barrels of this category immediately come to my mind:  A 30 Bower Alaskan barrel, plain (no sights or scope base), with Bower's load info and dies.  A 7MM Bower, plain, with dies, Bower load info, and photos of previous owner shooting same barrel with Don Bower.  I paid premium $s for these barrel because I know who made them, received the dies, and know they would shoot.  Worth every dime I paid.

If I were you, I would NOT sell as a set.  I would sell frame separately from each of your barrels with any specialty dies with them as an extra.  If someone wants one of your barrels real bad, offer them the frame as a package for about $20 less.

Your three barrels, IMHO, are worth: 22  $200,  7x30 $225-250, 358 JDJ $250-300 if you include dies and brass.  If you pull off the scopes and bases and sell everything seperately, you could get a little bit more.

Of what you have there, I personally would be interested in the 3 and 4 ring bases.  (I am NOT offering or in no way attempting a solicitation here....EXAMPLE ONLY!!)  The rest I would re-trade or re-sell.  This is how a lot of buyers are right now.  Someone may buy a barrel just to get the scope and then re-sell barrel and base/rings.

You will get less selling all as a package.  The more you break down the pieces, the more $$ you are likely to get.

Just my $.02....again, not an offer or solicitation of a sale.

Steve :)

Thanks for all your replys, I tried selling some other items a couple of months ago and it seems like not much is moving very quickly an more people have been interested in trades. The particular gun shop that has the rifles I'm after currently has a contender with pachmyer grips/forend in 357 max and pre g2 frame open sites for $399, so I'm going to use that setup for an example when I go for the trade (if I actually do, and they are at all interested that is) but I'm bound to loose a bit in the trade but I've got other contenders that I'm keeping.

Thanks again everyone for all your help, I sure appreciate it.
