62gr bullets for .223, who makes them??
« on: November 22, 2008, 02:44:15 PM »
I've been looking for 62gr bullets to reload and mimic the trajectory of the military's M855 62gr SS109 so as to match the BDC of my AR15's rear sightturret dial. I looked at Hornady and Nosler, neither offered 62gr.
I'm looking specifically for HP or SP tipped bullets, aside from being FMJ seems the steel-cored bullets arn't great on accuracy either.

My reloading catalogs only list a barnes tsx in 62, way to much money. A hornady 60 gr. sp or hp will give you the same trajectory if you can't find the one suggested above.
Sono nice grill.

To really mimic the SS-109s, you need to find a surplus source or a supplier to the military.

They do exist and are normally not that hard to locate.  Right now, the demand exceeds supply - wth the 62 gr high on the demand list.

Lost, check out www.wideners.com. They have the 62 grainers you are looking for.

Both Berger and Barnes make a non FMJ, non-boattail, 62 gr bullet, however, I don't think that another 62gr bullet will do what you want if matching the exact trajectory out beyond 400 meters is your goal as that is where difference in BC will really begin to show up in the amount of drop (http://www.ak-47.net/ammo/ss109.txt).  The SS109 has a much higher BC than other 62 grainers, 0.353, (www.nfa.ca/nfafiles/cfjarchive/ballistics/bcchart.doc) due to its boattail design and steel core construction increasing its length to achieve the same weight.  Depending upon what max range you are looking to mimic, I think you could choose a non-match HP bullet design you like and then tweak the load.

As said you create a problem saying you want to duplicate the military fmj bullet with a non fmj, SP or HP bullet. Not fun, but can be done.

Shotgun News, hard copy has listings for suppliers of bullets. The ones that come to mind would be exact copies of the fmj bullet, that is fmj. Hitechammo.com comes to mind. Patsreloading.com and gibrass.com come to mind. Sometimes they have deals on commercial bullets that are not fmj. From there it is the big outfits, grafs.com, wideners has been mentioned, brownells.com, midwayusa.com, Midsouthshooterssupply.com, Natchez.com, AWWW just google it. They are out there.

Last, and only if price is not a consideration. Mr. Corbin, Dave, corbins.com has a list of manufacturers who make bullets and will make any bullet you desire for a price. (They use Corbin equipment, mainly... surprise.) luck
