xr-100 .22-250 loads
« on: October 24, 2008, 10:01:58 AM »
Hi everyone,

I bought a .22-250 xr-100 with the idea of using it on small Texas meat deer. I've tried reloading it with the 60 gr Hornady bullet using a couple or three powders. Benchmark gives the best results but accuracy is still mediocre compared to the factory Winchester 45 grain bullets, which are very, very accurate. I had originally wanted to try the 55 gr Hornady, but Midway was sold out at the time and I went with the 60 gr bullet. My loads are certainly accurate enough to shoot deer with, but I'd really like to try for something better.

The next obvious step is to drop down in bullet weight and see if my barrel has a clear weight preference. If there are any other xr owners with .22-250s, I'd sure be interesting in hearing what loads they are using. In particular, what bullet weight shoots best in your rifle?

What is your twist rate? 1 in 14 I will guess. If that's the case, the lighter bullets will be the ticket. Probably won't shoot any of the heavier stuff cause of the twist rate.

Thanks for the great suggestion, Shottie. It never occurred to me that the rate of twist would be so slow, but I looked it up at the Remington site, and it's definitely a 1:14 twist rate, which explains everything.

I bought a box of Sierra 55 gr SBT and a box of 50 gr Hornady A-Max bullets a couple of days ago, and I'll see if I can get some ammo reloaded for testing next weekend. The factory Winchester 45 gr ammo set an accuracy standard that I'd really like to match with my reloads.

Not a problem! Glad I could help and good luck!

Just got myself an SPS in 22-250 a couple months ago so keep me posted on a good load that you come up with!

I owned a xr-100 but traded it off was one of the best shooting rifles that I have owned.
It would shoot any load that I reloaded into less than 3/4"or less.
It seemed to like 50grn bullets the best. I shot 50grn Combined technology bullet and 34.5 grns of IMR 3031 powder.
