Todays range observations
« on: November 04, 2008, 03:09:01 PM »
Spent the day at the range trying to ignore the US's entry into third world status.
I had my chrono with me and thought I would pass on what I found.
Fired from a Kar98k, 7.9x57mm Romanian, 154 gr, steel case. I found the velocity a bit lower than I expected; av velocity was 2478 fps and as expected it was dirty. However it was 100% reliable and consistantly produced 2 3/8 inch groups at 100 yrds.
Fired from a MN91/30 with Tikka 1943 barrel, 7.62x54mmR brass case, yellow tip (heavy ball), I think it is Hungarian. It comes in gray solder sealed tins and is paper wrapped in ten round packets. It chono'd at 2580 fps but hit 9 inches high and gave groups of 4 1/2 inches. With the bayonet installed the groups tightened up a bit but the gun then shot to point of aim.
Fired from a FN FAL (belgian circa 1980) Win 147gr chrono'd at 2812 fps and shot pretty much to point of aim. It was hard to tell however as the groups where more like patterns at 4 plus inches.
Handloads of 170gr Lapua D46 bullets over 46 gr of H380 chono'd at 2494 fps and grouped very repectably at two inches even at 100 yards.
People are like slinkies, they serve no purpose yet they bring a smile to your face when you push them down the stairs.
