Light primer stikes in a NEW Encore
« on: October 28, 2008, 02:47:25 AM »
New Encore frame and 7mm08 barrel. Maybe fired 15 times. The firing pin will strike the primers but not fire the ammo.  After maybe 4 or 5 stikes it will fire, maybe.  Ammo is Hornady light magnum ballistic tip.  Tried 2 different boxes and had the same thing. Any help would be great!!!!!

The standard question is do you have an extension on the hammer?  If so take it off and see if that helps.  Often the extra mass of an extension slows down the hammer enough to cause light hits.

I had the same problem in my NEW pro hunter in .30-06, but mine was Remington corelokt. I bought three boxes and this happend at least 6 times per box.  The gun has now seen at least one box of everything else I can find, with no other problems, and I tried a couple of corelokts at the range this weekend and it finally worked, I just hope it continues.  I guess my problem just had to work itself out.  At least I found out whether or not i had a flinch  ;D

I recently had the same problem with a new encore .308 barrel.  I noticed when I dropped a round in the chamber that there seemed to be excessive head space.  Checked everything out and actually had .015" of headspace.  This allows the case to slide forward with the firing pin impact and dissipate enough energy that it won't fire consistently.  Partial full length resizing to bring the headspace down to less than .005" solved the problem.  So far no more misfires and groups shrunk to under an inch.  If you are using only factory ammo you will have to try several types to see which one gives the least amount of headspace.  Federal Match ammo is about perfect in mine.

I broke the end of the fireing pin on one that was about new and still got lite strikes but no fires. You also could have some burn powder or other dirt around the fireing ping or under the hammer, it don`t take much.
