I've noted some muzzleloaders are un regulated
and some are treated just like a new bolt action
rifle in ATF policies regarding sales etc.

What when and why ?

The Huntsman is a firearm.  The Sidekick is a muzzleloader.

WHY is there a difference ?

I'll second that question.  Why ???

I just got the answer.....called my dealer.  He says if the barrel comes off and can be changed to a modern rifle or shotgun it is a firearm.

The Sidekick cannot be fitted with a cartridge type barrel.

The Huntsman can.

The reason why is that the Sidekick's hinge pin to breechface is much shorter than the Handi (Huntsman's) rifle pin to breechface length.

No one makes centerfire barrels that have the shorter hinge pin to breechface length like the Sidekick

Even if someone made a barrel that would fit the sidekick frame it would be illegal to install it as you would be bypassing the firearm regulations on selling a firearm. Since the sidekick action was not sold as a firearm making it into one would be a definate illegal act. The huntsman will accept shotgun barrels which makes it a "firearm". I bought one used and even though it did not have the shotgun barrel with it I had to fill out all the "firearm" paperwork.

I do not believe this to be true.  You can legally convert a cap & ball revolver to use cartridges.

There are kits to do that but you need to check on the laws.

They do sell the cylinders, but I'm guessing you better buy one soon if you wnat one.  I expect them to go away with the gun shows sometime around January 20th, 2009.
