.243 youth success

Thanks to this site, I got my grandson's .243 youth shooting 1 inch groups at 100 yds. I was using 100 gr. bullets with marginal success. After reading some info here, I switched to 80gr bullets and that made all the difference. The barrel likes the 80 remington express PSP. Unfortunately for my grandson, he no longer has an excuse if he misses. ;D

My dad taught me " your first shot will always be your best- make it count". I'll pass that on using a Handi. Don't need no stinkin black gun to hunt with.

My best friend and I learned to hunt together.  Either his dad or my dad took us out until we were old enough to drive.  When the driver's license arrived, we were gone as often as possible.  We were really close as to the number of animals we harvested.  I would get two, he would get two.  Then we would each get one, etc.  When we were shooting .22LR, he shot a Ruger 10/22 and average about a box of shells per outing.  I shot a Savage single shot and would shoot 10-15 shots.  He would shoot on average about 5x as many shots to get the same number of animals.  When we were shooting shotguns, he shot a Remington 870 20ga. and I shot an older Winchester SxS.  He would average about 3 shots to my one because I was used to shooting one shot, and that second trigger on Dad's shotgun was in such a place if I pulled it, the recoil would cause the trigger guard to smack my hand. 

One good shot is definitely better than 2-3 bad shots.

Johnny, you're doing it.  I love to see kids hunt, fish and shoot.  And, I like it best when they learn on single shots.  When I was a kid in my early 20s, I was dove shooting with an older friend.  I was shooting an Ithaca 16 featherweight pump.  I went to pull a shot and was out of ammo.  I flinched, and my friend handed me his car keys and said "Go get what's in the trunk".  It was a box of shells and a Topper .410 single shot.  I was outshooting him by the end of the afternoon, and he shot trap and skeet regularly.  That began my love affair with the single.  It continues today, and I believe has helped make me a better hunter and marksman.   Pete

JonnyC, Glad to hear you got the 243 shooting so good!
I really hope your grandson gets to take some game with it. If he does be sure to let us know, pictures are always great.
