The Artilleryman, called a Matross (Cannoneer) wears one of the fabled "blue and buff" uniforms. This unit was raised in New York in July of '76and was ordered north with Montgomery's Army for the attack on Quebec. On the 23 July, 1776, general orders were issued to detail men for service as marines and seamen with the fleet forming on Lake Champlain. Congress ordered an additional pay of 8 shillings per month for each non-commissioned officer so detailed. The Sgt. shown is from Col. de Haas's 1st Pennsylvania Batalion of the 4th Brigade. He wears the red worsted epaulet of rank and is armed with a blunderbuss. All blunderbusses were turned over to the fleet for that purpose by general order dated 16th August 1776.
n.b. I am the 3rd person to hold title to a parcel of General Montgomery's land. He never made it back from Quebec. His widow was Janet Livingston.
