NEF Handi-rifle 44 mag
« on: November 11, 2008, 09:46:16 AM »
This is my first post.  There is a lot of good info here.  I just picked up a new NEF 44 mag handi from the local pawn for a good price. I was hoping you could give me some advise on deer hunting loads, and plinking loads. I don't handload yet, but have a friend who does.  The serial number on the rifle is NW27****.  Also, if you have suggestions on sights or a scope, I would appreciate it.

Thanks.

I have always loaded a Hornady 240 gr. XTP over 22 grains of 2400. That might be a little warm according to the newer manuals, but it shot lights out in my father-in-law's lever gun. As for scope mounts, I really like the factory base-it has more slots cut into it so you have more options with short scopes. For optics I like a 4x or a 2-7.

WELCOME!!

Sorry but I cannot recommend any commercial loads. I would suggest a couple that should work well enough. But only range time will tell if your handi likes them. Hornadys new lever evolution ammo has a 44mag. Plain old rem 240 SP was always good for the old Ruger DeerSlayers.
I HAVE had good luck with the 270 Speer Gold Dot bullet once you start to reload. Healthy dose of H110/Win 296/Lil'Gun/2400/AA#9 and you will have a great deer load.

As to sites, many like scopes while others prefer peep sites. Both are readily available and each has its merits. Taking, caliber into account, I would say either would be fine. If your eyes are still good, stock sites or a Williams peep will keep the handi trim, light and easy to handle. If need be, a lo-power scope would squeeze out all available accuracy.

 Good luck,
 CW

Standard load for more than 15 years has been 24.0g H-110 under a Hornady 240g XTP.  Has always shot well and has some smack-down.  That is for deer.  Now going to experiment with cast bullets and LilGun.  I like the 2 1/2 power scope I have on several rifles.  Even a 1.5 Weaver helps with the old eyes, and is as fast as you can get with out going to a Laser.  DP

All my Handi 44's will shoot the Federal Fusion 240gr. real well and two of em like the Hornady Leverevolution loads.

Even though I reload this caliber I have found the WWB 240 gr SP from WalMart to work pretty good.

Same here.

I use a Bushnell Banner 3X9X40 with an NEF base and Leupold Rifleman rings. I'm very satisfied with that combination.
