Average longevity for a semi-automatic pistol?
« on: July 29, 2003, 04:46:51 PM »
I once saw a test result for the Beretta 92 pistol done for number of rounds fired, after they had said they fixed those slide cracking problems with the US Military years ago.  I can't recall the exact number but I think it was around 50,000 on the slide, and 70,000 on the frame, or visa versa, before it cracked and failed.

What is the average number of regular loads that a person can fire in a typical modern semi-auto pistol (all brands, calibers) before the gun needs to have a major component replaced, such as a slide, frame repair, etc?  Either with or without a special recoil spring, recoil buffer, or really light loads.

Some examples I am curious about is the Model 1911 semi-auto pistol, the Ruger P series, Glock, Makarov, and even the small Walther PPK?

 :-)

Thanks

The military imposes a 5000 round trial and most all well made modern semi autos will shoot that without any major problems.Of course there are always the exceptions. The Beretta ad you saw said 30,000 rounds fired without a failure. If you shot 100 rounds a week it would take you 50 weeks just to shoot 5000 rounds.I had a Ruger MKII that I fired close to 250 rounds a week for close to a year and never had a problem.
Good luck and good shooting,

I had a Colt 1911A1 I shot in Combat and IPSC from the early '60's with Jeff Coopers Southwest Pistol League until the mid 80's when I shifted to Cowboy.  I estimate that pistol fired at least 100,000 rounds, about 500 rounds a month for about 20 years.  It ate one GI slide due to stretching from recoil which made the locking lugs too far from the breech face, so I replaced the slide after 15 years with a Series 70.  The barrel at some point was replaced with a Bar-Sto.  It now belongs to a friend who still shoots it.

Read a report years ago about a Ruger 22 Auto, either a MarkI or a Standard, that, as a rental gun in a range fired over 1 million rounds...

I am at about 11,000 rounds deep into my glock 22, and I will keep you posted.

Anyone with some rental experience? What has lasted the longest?
Cheers,

My Colt 1911 was made in 1918, it has had trigger work, adjustable rear sight, dovetailed front sight, and new grips.  Total rounds, no idea, but I have a round of ammo headstamped 1918 I plan to shoot new years night, 2018.

chuck:  is that round brass cased with a silverish bullet??  I think I may have some of that ammo - picked it up years ago with a 1917 Colt revolver in 45 acp and it was 60 yrs old and still shot.  Hope it goes bang for you on New Years.  Mikey.

Im about 10,000 rounds into my G22 and 7,000 into my G17. NO sighs of wear at all. I think it really depends on how well you take care of your guns and how hot the ammo is you shoot through them. In general Id have to say that a well maintained auto with moderate loads from any of the major manufacturers will last 100,000 or more.  Not to say that some dont fail sooner due to abuse or a flaw in one of the components.
