Hi all, I have a chance at a 450 marlin. I have other Marlins but not this one. For those that shoot them, how is the recoil unported? I love the 45/70, but I don't want the recoil of a .458 Winny. Tell me what you think, thanks! JeffG

I have a 45/70 w/o ports. I shoot handloads, so its the equivalent. It kicks like hell from the bench, but it's tolerable to shoot offhand and in the field.
If you get one, get a WWG happy trigger, best 80 bucks I ever spent.

they are 1895s sorry to be picky. As to recoil they do have some. If you can handle 3 inch mags out of a 12 guage you wont have problems with one.

Sorry, a typo, 1895.
Would any one here think of it as **all purpose?** Hogs, deer bear, elk, bison??

If you want to make it All Purpose" within the range limitation I would suggest loading your own. The factory stuff will push you around more then you will like in the long run. Having said that, the 45-70 can do the same if you handload. I have had both, the Marlin was ported and very L O U D !! I still have two 45-70's in Handi's.

Ya, with all said and done, I am leaning toward a 45/70, unported. I had a H&R Shikari in 45/70 and I loved it. A very special little hunter got that one for Christmas one year.
Thanks for the input!

Get the .450! You'll never feel the recoil when shooting at game.

Ok, answer me this.... How long do you think the 450 will be in existence? Some are mourning its passing already.... I hope NOT.

Cant say for sure how long. I don't think they'll disappear. I think they'll probably stay around like they are now. I do know Thompson and a few others are making them. I also hear that in the shops they sell pretty fast when they're in.

I've had mine for about four years and I love it -- no complaints. It's taken a couple deer and a very large blackie so far. There is some recoil but like said above it's not too bad except on the bench.
Blessings,
