I finally did it.
« on: November 14, 2008, 08:32:41 AM »
Some may say that I am set in my ways.  ;)
I bought a 280 handi in the pawn shop here in town about 3 years ago. It had lock up issues, and I sent it back to H&R to get fixed 2 years ago.
I have been working on this thing off and on for 2 years trying to get it to shoot a group at 100 yrds.I have tried every thing you all have suggested, and some you haven,t. I tried every powder- bullet combo in the book. :-[
I also tried several different scopes. I finally setteled on the bushnell elite 3-12 and a moderate load of hodg. 3031 under the honady 139 gr sp.
Well it shoots great with this combo now.  ::)
I don,t think I am set in my ways, I think I am presisstant. :D

I think you are one of most presisstant on the board. Most would have ditched the 280 and gone
to some thing else. Some times it take a lot of work, in trying differant combos. Good luck. Marv.

I was going to ask the same question - What do you think you did to make it a shooter? Was it the scope, something you did to the gun, your loads?

I do not think you are set in your ways if you kept at it for 2 years ;) You are however; persistent. 8)

Good Luck and Good Shooting

The coincidental thing about this post is that a friend and neighbor, a forester, just dropped off his Handi 280 to see if I can help him with it.  It's shooting 5 inch groups.  He doesn't need it now, so it's a late December project for me after ML season.  I'm sure I'll be back to the FAQs.
Keep both eyes open and make the first shot good.

Well I think it was a combination of fitting the forestock, getting very good optics. and making sure all the screws are tight on the bases and rings.
I also can,t tell you how much powder and bullits I went through getting the wright combo for this gun.
I finally setteled on 43 gr of 3031, and 139 gr. Hornady interlock.
I am getting about an inch group with ouy trying very hard at 100 yrds. You would really appreciate this if you knew how bad the groups were before.
I also went to remington 280 brass and quit tring to fireform 06, and 270 pick up brass from the range.
Tonight is the first time I ever took the 280 out hunting. I have never had the confidense top use  it before.
I got a little mule deer button buck out past the cemmitary, about 3 miles from home.
The load preformed very muck to my liking. One shot one kill at 60 yards.
I wish I could come up with the exact remady for all my troubles with this weapon, but it truley was pure stuborness on my part to not give in .
I am going to take it out with me in the AM for whitetail.
Good luck with your handi's and good luck.
Stan
