629 Mountain gun question
« on: November 02, 2008, 08:18:12 AM »
In my local gun shop there is a used 629-? MG  It looks in good shape at least as it sits there in the glass case. I have not handled it yet. The price tag at $ 550.00 is that a little high or is it a good price for a used SS MG or should I try to haggle him down some. I am not sure???

Thanks for the help

That price would be very good here in California.  I passed on one tagged at $750 used, but would probably jump right in at $550  or even a little over $600 if it's tight.

In this area I'm finding prices of $495-$650 for most nice Smith's. The new lightweight big bores are more used, and the 4", and Mountain Guns usually are on the high side of those numbers while the  6 1/2" barreled guns are usually closer to $500. I've looked around in the area from western NH to  western Maine. The last 4" 629 I saw used was $625 so I would say that $550 for a good mountain gun would be a good deal around here.

Well I am in the interior of Alaska and used items like that are sometimes hard to find. I think I will take a closer look at it this week. I just hope it is not one of the older 629-1 or 2 and would prefer it was a 629-5 or 6.

Thanks for the responces, that is just what I needed to hear.

There are no 629-1 Mountain Guns, the 629-2 was a Mountain Revolver in a matte or frosted finish. If you want one that price is probably a fair one.

I went back in the gun shop today and took a good look this time. It's a 629-6 appears to be very tight with a good trigger and the shop owner threw in a box of 44 special buffalo bore ammo, so the gun followed me home. Can't have to many 44's.

Thanks for the help

In central Illinois, I would of probably broken my arm, getting my wallet out but, if that's a IL 629 I'd consider this a different story? Without the dash number, you just can't call these things.

I already did buy it. Seemed like a good deal to me. As to the buying frenze I have heard of this but in my remote location it is not a real big problem. Most people around hear that I know have what ever they need or want. I do wonder what the next four years will bring though.

Thanks 45north
