Eagle tried eating my beaver!!!!
« on: November 03, 2008, 02:41:55 PM »
Caught a nice 58 lb beaver, when I got to the set I saw an eagle perched above my set. It had started dinning on my catch. Only damaged the front leg, so I'm hoping I can pin it shut. I caught it in one of my Duke 330 that I bought from Tom. I had it connected to a 6' cable into deeper water, but that darn Duke stoned it. It was laying right were the trap was set.

Shawn, I have had eagles pull a lot of fur out of some of my beaver.Even had one try and fly away with a smaller beaver I had caught. They are scavengers, and always looking for an easy meal---only difference between an eagle and a crow--is the color of their heads.

Usually if  animal is picked clean of meat off bones it is a bird of prey. And with mink they  peel hide back just like they had a skinning knife and have lunch.  I scared off a huge mature eagle off  a pond i was trapping for rats and thought   (Crap)  i will have torn up rats that were visible from above in water.  Must have just gotten there as eagle arrived as all rats (even some floating  with partial body above water) all whole and no damage.    Birds of prey have to eat too but  i prefer  for them to eat the carcasses i put out in areas i know they  inhabit or hunt.  An old trapper told me about this method and it sure works good.. very good for owls too as  great horned  cause alot of damage to trapped rats ect.
