New Hawkeye in 338 Federal
« on: July 15, 2008, 08:13:19 PM »
I just traded my SBH bisley hunter for a new Hawkeye in 338 Federal. What's been the impression so far as accuracy and any recommended reloads so far?

Thanks

Mine likes the 185gr triple shock load from Federal(MOA or better consistently).  It didn't do well with the nosler factory load.  I started reloading and have had luck with the 210gr Triple Shock, nothing spectacular but plenty of accuracy for hunting.

I like 180 grain Accu-bonds over 43 grains of IMR4895. Great reduced recoil load. Also like 210 grain Swift Scirocco II's over 41 grains of W748. Both are minimum loads.

338 federal scored last weekend, antelope 212yrds lasered after the shot. 160gr barnes over 50gr of h335. nothing spectacular, and could've been done with anything else, but I'm glad to have broke it in.

While I do not own one I have been shooting a 338-06 for 12 years and have had great results with both the 210 gr Partition and the 185 gr TSX on elk, deer, hogs, nilgai... I believe if I were shooting one I would go with the 185 gr TSX and not look back.

Just shot a cow elk a week ago with mine, hand loaded 185gr TSX at 125 yds.

160gr barnes bullets scored again this weekend. 2 Mulies, 5x5 and 4x5. Both DRT heart lung shots. I'm getting more fond of the 338 all the time. I'm gonna give the 180 accubonds a try next.
