7.65 Argentine mauser opinions needed

I just saw one in good shape for $250. Is it too much? It is a carbine model made in Berlin by Loews. Any info on the cartridge itself and the gun because I know nothing about them. I really liked this rifle, its short and light weight, perfect for behind my truck seat. Thanks  Dave

A Argentine Mauser by Lowes in good shape for $250 - good deal.  Have the gunsmith check the headspace and take a good look at the barrel but otherwise, grab it.  The cartridge is a very nice round to hunt with and ammo is available; if you reload, all the better.  Mikey.

The rifle is great.  The round is very similar to 308 win in ballistics with a slightly larger bullet 7.65 Arg.  Ammo is available from norma a little expensive but a with a cheap deal on a 98 mauser not too bad.
Later you can always screw on a 7X57, 8X57, 308 or any of the necked up or down versions of them.  If I remember right the rim on the 7.65 is a little larger than the .473 of the common group but not much

Numbers matching?  Buy it.  I've only got one 1891 and it is beautiful...have ammo but have never fried it yet

Is it a '91 or a '98 Mauser? Both are fine rifles but I somehow liked the lines of the '91 but I guess I'm alone in that regard. Back in the early '70s one could pick up beautiful '91 Argentines for fifty bucks, I had one which appeared unfired. It was about the finest machined and finished military rifle I've ever seen, right up there with the Swedes.

Its the 91. I thought it was the nicest old military rifle I've seen. Didn't check to see if the numbers matched though. I was surprised how light the carbine was, I thought all old surplus rifles were 9lbs plus.

I think the little carbine you have is very fine> I allways thought they were one of the best looking milsurps. One, thing, though, IF you rebarrel it, I would not go to the .308 class, too much pressure.
At one time,it was somewhat popular to rebarrel them to the .35 Rem round.

The 7.65 is already a ".308W" class cartridge. What is meant is; same bullet weight at the same velocity.  The factory 150 gr loads out of the 29" barrels run 2800+ fps, the same as .308W out of 22" barrels.  The case volume of the 7.65 is larger and the expansion ratio a little higher so given the same velocity in both cartridges the pressure is lower in the larger 7.65 Argentine case.  BTW; factory Norma and Hornady 7.65 and milsurp 7.65 run the same pressures as most U.S. M80 7.62 NATO, around 53-55,000 psi.  This is not a guess taken from books but actual measurements with an Oehler m43 PBL.  Factory Winchester, Federal and Remington .308W run 55-58,000 psi.

As you mention; rebarrel at your own discression. I rebarreled a M91 to .35 Remington and am quite pleased with it.

7.65 is ballistly the same as 308 Win just pushes a 313 calliber bullet if I remember right.

It is actually slightly more powerful than a 308.
Privi Partizan makes some nice softpoints in this caliber.
I think they are 180 grain but not sure without going to
the safe and getting them out. I have an 1891, bayonet and all.
A fine old boltgun. The best long range group I have ever shot
was with that rifle. Not even gonna say how tight the group was or the
range, No one would believe it anyway. Suffice it to say, the 1891
rifle is accurate.
