Baiting deer for trailcam recommendations
« on: January 26, 2009, 05:58:58 AM »
All,

I want to bait some areas this summer and setup my trailcam to get an idea of what blacktail bucks are living in the area I hunt.    I tried cracked corn last year to no avail, partly b/c a bear was living in that area and he/she ate all the corn.  What recommendations do you guys have and is there anything bears won't flock too?  I can't do foodplots b/c we don't get much rain in the summers here in California and I'm around 4000 feet in elevation.

If it is legal in your area (it isnt in NY), you might want to try a mineral/attractant mix in powder form.

It's legal up to 2 weeks before Deer Season.  I'm mainly looking to use it in June/July to see what's running around in the Jungle.

We used soy beans in a area that the bear were wrecking the corn feeders. Worked great but expensive.

I'll look into that but currently that area is unaccessable due to the snow is too deep.

If you have deep snow, whole corn is a cheap way to draw deer. Again, it isnt legal in my state, and some biologists think that it will mess up the enzymes in the deer's "winter rumen", but they will find it and eat it.

If it is legal just set a salt block near a known trail.  The deer will use salt in the summer months but don't so much care for it once it gets colder.  It will draw deer for years after it's melted and gone, theyll lick the dirt and dig down for it.  Its cheaper than anything else you'll use and it will work for a long time.

if you use salt i found that trace mineral salt works great it gives some nutrients and it seems to help in antler growth.  i put it out early in the year and they come to pretty often dont know about bears dont have have where i live
