Bison / Hog mounts are back.
« on: August 23, 2008, 01:29:02 PM »
Hi All,

Here are some pics of the bison I shot in 2006 and the hog I shot last September.  I'm happy with the bison, but, again disappointed with the hog (even though I used a different taxidermist whose other work is quite good).  I'd like some suggestions of other taxidermists who do a good job on hogs if you can.

Many thanks!!!

I've only had one hog mounted it was the one I took in TN at Tellico Junction Lodge back in '91 I think it was. I let them do it and ship it to me and I guess it looks as well done as most hog mounts I've seen. I've seen much worse mounts than it or yours either for that matter which really isn't a bad looking one in fact. To me hogs just don't really make good shoulder mounts so none really look quite right to my eyes as compared to most deer species.

Bison mounts are always impressive if for no other reason the sheer size of them.

Thanks for the comments.  Yes....I'm not crazy about any of my hog mounts.  At$475 a pop, I think I'm done mounting them....at least for today!!!

DougK...the hog was about 400Lbs.

I'm gonna mount ONE MORE only. Faye wants a big black one on the wall for her and when she gets him it will go up there but I don't expect I'll ever mount another for me.

I do wish I'd have had the Gray Ghost Whumpus Hog mounted but I didn't and I do regret that decision. It was to be Faye's hunt tho and she chickened out on me that night as it was just too cold for the clothes we took on the trip and her knee was giving her fits. She had fallen down the stairs going to the concrete floor of the garage not long before we left for the trip and it messed up her knee pretty badly. The cramped blind we sat in put her in a lot of pain.

If she had shot him I'd have mounted it for her and as wide spread as the story of that hog became I really wish I had anyway.

Unless something truly unique comes along I'll never have another mounted for me but if/when Faye takes that big black one she wants it goes on the wall.

I doubt seriously we'll be able to make another trip this year. I've bought a new Toyota Sequoia and a pickup this year, put a roof over my side shed at the barn to add 1200 more square feet of covered storage and fenced my pond and about 1/3 the rest of my property. I'm kinda cash starved right now.

I'll keep it in mind but that's a long haul thru gun unfriendly country from here to there. I'd love to see the area as I'm sure it's beautiful. I've been to NH but not to VT yet in my travels. I flew up on business back before I retired but did get to see a bit of country side while there.

Nice looking mounts  ;D drdougrx I 've been thinking about heading back to Wildhill for a boar hunt . Last time I was there was 1981 and looking at your pictures sure brings me back. Are the lights still powered by batteries? Does he still use the dams turbine to recharge. I read here that you take a couple of  critters when you go. What is the pricing structure when you take multiples. I thinking about Thanksgiving week if its available and bringing my adult daughter. She wants to kill a boar to have mounted. Me, a boar and a mouflon.

Hey Smacky,

Going back on Dec. 4th-7th with some GB folks (Mikey, S.B., Six_Gunz and a good buddy of mine).  You and your daughter are welcome to come!!

I beleive he's closed thanks giving week.  You'll need to give them a call.  Yep the lights are still on batteries, but he was installing turbines last Sept. when I was there...we'll see if he really has electricity that doesn't come from his gas generator!!

Pricing is not discounted for multiple animals, though I expect a deal can be struck..it's up to you.

Hope you can join us in December!

Doug,

I like your new additions to your trophy room. I would not have the room for a bison, but they are impressive.

Thanks for the invitation, but I kinda blew my budget for hunting outside of my lease on my Africa trip.

The hogs mounts look good to me.  I've shot boat loads of hogs, but never one I wanted mounted.  Maybe this year I will finally bag one worth mounting.   Nice buffalo..
