opening day
« on: November 15, 2008, 01:32:27 PM »
How did you guys like that wind and the snow we had today?

I thought it was a beautiful morning but the wind was cutting through my old military jungle boots. So my feet were cold to say the least.

What did you guys think?

I was in my Outhouse blind with a Coleman heater and killed the best deer of my life. It was a beautiful day.

My computer won't let me post pics right now. I'll try again later. It hasn't been working very good lately. I hunt in north central Missouri. The deer I got isn't a record book deer but he is a trophy for me. He has 9 points with good mass and long tines. He also has a split brow tine. It snowed here and was very windy. I posted a picture earlier that I got with my trail cam and it is the same deer.

The temperature was in the 20s here and as I remember, those jungle boots weren't made for that kind of weather. Not for my feet anyway.

I about froze my behind off yesterday and the only deer I saw was two that were holed up in a bunch of brush and I stumbled on them when I was going home.  I didn't get a shot.  Today I made up for it with a 8 point buck at about 10:00 this morning.  He was chasing a doe and made the mistake of stopping when I bleated to him.  I was hunting alone and I still don't know how I got him up into the pickup bed.  I just checked him in and now I have to go clean him.  Then to the recliner for the rest of the day.  I may go out after a doe tomorrow or not.

Saw a lot of deer on Friday.  Saw a few on opening day. Saw more on Sunday. The windy weather had them bedded down on opening day.  It was cold in the Doghouse blind, but colder outside.  The guys up in the trees were really cold.  Sunday was perfect.

Everybody in my deer camp and at a cafe in Versailles where we ate dinner agreed that counting points has had an effect on whether we took shots.  Many weren't taken because the animal ran off while we were fumbling with our binos.  We will learn.

Has anybody heard the opening day statistics.

There have been mornings where I think I could have put more meat in the freezer by shooting squirrels than by shooting a deer. :D

I got cold, too.  Brrr!  The dang wind holwed here as well in southeast Mo.

I seen 8 deer opening day.  No racks that I could tell.  I shot a doe at 1:10PM because I wanted the meat and I wanted to get back in the house where it is warm.   ;D

I have hunted off and on every day but other than the deer I saw the first two day I have not seen anything.  My hunting area is an overgrown area between two wooded ridges.  There is little food in my area and it is mainly a passing area between the two ridges and occasionally a bedding area.  When there is little hunting pressure on the two ridges there are not too many deer in my area.  We are going down to my father in law's land in Wayne county this week end and hopefully we will see some deer there.
