.223 Bullet seating and other problems..........
« on: December 02, 2008, 12:41:15 PM »
Please help me, my head is starting to get clouded with numbers

My Handi .223 bull 1:12 twist is not liking anything I load. I've been reloading for over 20 yrs but this time I can't get lucky. Here is what I've found. To seat a 55gr VMAX to touch the lands is 2.442 OAL. My load is 26.0 BLc-2, 55gr VMAX seated to 2.380 OAL. This load will group about .910 @ 100 yards.

I would like to seat to be off the lands .015 - .020 but at 2.380 there is only .177 of bullet in the case.

Varget did not shoot better than 1.75 inches. BLc-2 seems to be better, but 26.0 is a mild load.

Any suggestions on which way to go?

You find most handies have long throats, also the 1-12"  ones seem to like lighter bullets, but you'll deffinatly find out more in the NEF forum. We be a little nutz there. ;)

I spent several years trying to work up a sub inch load for a .25-06, THAT gun was so inaccurate I had it rebarreled! I could NOT bring my self to inflict it on any one else. Also ,there are very few sub inch guns in the bargain grade group.Have you tried any LONGER bullets in it? I suppose you have taken a chamber cast to be certain that the chamber/bore alignment is right?! A gunsmith showed me a casting he took of a Savage rifle. The chamber/bore were so misaligned that Savage rebarreled the gun FREE.
