Great Weekend!
« on: November 17, 2008, 03:26:12 PM »
Well, I opened up season last week by taking a 1 1/2 old doe.  A great way to start out with some good meat.  Over this past weekend, I got up Saturday morning at 5:30am to go hunting again.  I looked outside and it was pouring the rain.  I lost all dedication and climbed back in my bed! haha  I did NOT feel like sitting in the rain all morning.  About 9:30am, it was only drizzling off and on so I decided to go up and do a circle around my property.  I didn't see anything so I cam back and sat in my ladder stand up on the ridge for about 30 minutes.  For some reason, I just didn't feel like being in the woods...I was literally shifting my weight to my feet to get up when I heard leaves rustling to my left.  I looked over and here came two does around the ridge...a yearling and a 3 year old.  I got to my feet, took aim, and shot the 3 year old.  They both took off running and she dropped about 50 yards down the hill.  I was ready to get her so I immediately climbed out of my stand took about ten steps from the bottom of my ladder.  I looked up and a decent sized buck was standing 40 yards from me, head down, following that doe.  He only had one thing on his mind and he never knew I was there.  I put one in him but failed to compensate for being so close so I shot him low (gut shot).  I had to shoot him again after he ran about 60 yds.  He went down immediately after that.  I just finished cutting up the last of the doe this evening.  I got about 40 lbs of burger, five roasts, and countless steaks and stew meat out of the two of them.  My freezer is looking good! haha

Here's some pictures:

Hope everyone else is having a good season!  I'd like to get one more before season is out.

By the way, it's a seven point buck.  Haven't measured the spread on him.  I'm going to mount the antlers...ordered the plate kit today.

Mmm, I can smell the backstrap on the grill now.   ;D  What gun did you use?  First glance it looks like a Remington 700....

Good eye...it's a Remington 700 SPS BuckMaster edition in .30-06 with a Nikon 3x9x40 on it.  I LOVE that gun!  I shoot factory ammunition from it and put 4 out of 5 touching at 100 yds.  That's good enough for me! haha

Yep, I thought that it was the Buckmaster one.  Did the scope come on it?  I think I recall seeing them at Dicks with the camo Nikon as part of the package.  As for the accuracy, well, meat on the ground tells the story in the end!

No, this scope didn't come as a package with the gun.  I don't remember what model Nikon it is...it was $229 I think.  It's a nice setup.  I'm obviously happy with it. :)

Wow, a mile and a half drag wouldn't be fun with ONE deer...even a small one.  I was lucky, the buck ran himself to the edge of the woods where I was able to pick him up with the ATV.  The doe was pretty difficult because she dropped in the middle of a very dense thicket which I could barely get into myself, let alone the ATV.  Once I drug her clear of that though, it wasn't bad.
