Red Oak for grips.
« on: August 19, 2003, 02:18:43 PM »
All my single action revolvers are stocked with Walnut. Recently I found a source for Red Oak of furniture quality. Would anyone know who makes panels out of Red Oak or have a reason why they would'n work for grip panels.

Thanks,
Lucky Joe

Should work fine, I use it in furniture making, never tried making grips, but have seen them for sale for the Gov. Model. Would have to fill the relatively open grain, but should certainly be tough. If I think of the maker will post back. Site for oak grips http://www.truckwithaheart.com/grips.htm

Oak is pretty plain from a conventional stock figure point of veiw but I suppose it would work..  There are sooooooooo many beautiful hard dense woods to work with why would you want to use OAK??  Get some catalogs from custom wood turning and woodworker supply houses.  They often show a variety of tropical hardwoods and other wood from around the world..  But if you wish, oak should work.  It splits fairly easily, is quite porous and usually has little figure.  The first won't be a problem if the grips are thick enough, the pores can be sealed, and the thickness of the growth rings can be interesting.......  Check those woodworking, wood turner supply houses.  They stock beautiful burl, fiddleback and contrasting grain wood for little money..then have fun..

My first attemt at stock making was in Red Oak. Didn't turn out too bad. Interesting colour, but as said above, quite plain.

I've used Red Oak for grips for a Colt SAA and for two Colt 1911's.  Works fine.  The grips have help just fine.
