.357 dia 170 grain Gold Dot?
« on: September 27, 2008, 08:52:22 AM »
Does anyone know what the maximum velocity this bullet can withstand without exploding/fragmenting. Was thinking of trying it in my .35 Remington???

I would contact Speer and see what speed it can be pushed to with out coming apart.  Since it's made for the 357 mag, it might not hold up well.  DP

I have used it on perhaps a dozen deer in various guns and it has woorked well. Those guns include a 10 in 357 Max, a 14 in 35 Rem, a 12 in 358 Bullberry and a 20 in carbine in 358 Bullberry and a 357 Lever gun. My wife used that bullet in a 10 in  357 Max successfully on a nice Wyoming Antelope. In all cases the expansion was excellant...some would say severe..all but two were one shot DRT. All but three were complete pass thru...the 3 recovered bullets are in a collection in the gun room and are picture perfect mushroom.  That said I have chosen the Hornady 180 grain for the bigger cases and use the 170 GD for the 357 mag and 357 Max..it is an accurate bullet in my guns.

I'm running it in a .357 carbine at velocities of near 1700fps and have gotten one hole through penetration on whitetail deer (no signs of bullet fragmentation).
