I am looking to get a new varmint/target rifle. I'm pretty set on .22-250. I like a bull barrel in 24" or 26". Savage, Howa, Remington, or Ruger. You help me decide.

The Remington will be the most accurate.

I was hoping to shoot a little heavier bullets. Somewhere in the 60-70 grain range. Remington shows only a 1in14 twist rate will that be fast enough for those bullets. Savage shows 1in12.

If you want accuracy and a sensible twist rate in a quality rifle it seems that Savage is your only choice.

Well I have a friend in Mo how brought a Savage 112 BVS I think it was and he used it for a couple of seasons as a 600 yards Hi Power and BR rifle. He then re-barreled it into 243 AI as the groups were being affected too much at 600 yards by the wind. However not before the markers complained that he was hitting their 3" spotting disc using target aperture sights too often. His groups were only 2" high but wind sometimes spread them to about 4" but using 105 VLD bullets in the 243 reduces this a lot.
Even in standard trim that Savage was one accurate rifle and it accounted for quite a few Coyotes and still does but of course now it has that Lija 3 groove 243 barrel attached.
It would seem that the Savage has a lot to commend it

If you are looking for a heavy barrel look at the Ruger M77VT. Has a good 2 stage trigger and every one that I have owned will shoot as good/better than the other brands. They can be found used for less than $500.
I own all of the brands that you mentioned except the Howa and believe the Ruger is the best deal for the dollar

I'm not sure that like Swampman I can say with certainty that the Remington will be the "most accurate" but based on my experience with Remington Varmint rifles it is safe to say it will be VERY ACCURATE. My current .22-250 is a Remington 700 SPS Varmint and can say with certainty that using Remington and Hornady factory ammo it's darn near a half inch gun at 100 yards having done nothing to it but lighten the trigger pull to a bit less than three pounds.
I've not done any reloading for it yet. I did the initial sight in with what was left of an old box of Remington factory ammo and it made a ragged hole at 100 yards after sight in. I had ordered a bunch of Hornady ammo with 50 grain V-Max and used it at the GBO Prairie Dog shoot this year. It was hitting them regularly out past 400 yards and the few groups I shot on paper prior to heading out to OK with it were all well under an inch and most closer to a half inch some less.
I've owned a bunch of Remington 700 Varmint rifles and never yet seen one that didn't shoot that way. I paid $550 for both my SPS Varmint rifles.

Personally I perfer Savage. The main reason is that it is so easy to rebarrel them and I like to play around with wildcats. As for accuracy I don`t think there is that much difference between the major manufactures at present, and if your serious you will bedding and will put the rest of them on an even keel.
