.375 Winchester to .356 Winchester conversions
« on: August 13, 2003, 05:43:20 PM »
Two questions:

1.  Can a Winchester Big Bore in .375 Winchester be successfully converted to .356 Winchester simply by rebarreling to .356?

2.  In the Winchester line, the Big Bores (.375 and .356) have beefed up receivers.  Is this true of Marlin, too, and can a Marlin then be rebarreled from either .30-30 or .35 remington to .356 Winchester?

Thanks, in advance, for your feedback.

With enough money anything can be done. However if you really need a 356 why not sell your 375, buy a marlin 30/30 - 35rem and use the leftover money for a conversion. Reading the marlin board seems many are getting this conversion. Add disclaimer here: A 35rem reamed to 356 for a rimless 356 or add bolt from a 30/30 for 356win. Other option is to take 30/30 and rebarrel to 356win. Most conversions I've heard were marlins as you know the winny 94 needed to be redesigned  (beefed up) for big bore rounds.

The rimless seems like the least expensive. 375 wins I ve seen go on average $350+ . And I've seen glenfields and jc higgens go for $150+

Check out the marlin home page talk boards lot's of info there for you.

Oh, no the marlins don't need to be beefed up.

Norville:

Thanks a ton!  I've already got a .356 in a 94 AE Big Bore but have been scouring the auctions for a Marlin.  Let one slip through my fingers a few weeks ago.  It's great news to me that a regular 'ol Marlin 30-30 can simply be rebarreled to .356!  I'm now on a mission to find an inexpensive Marlin30-30 for this project.

Thanks again, Smokey

I would call around first or search the net and find out who will do it and which cal is prefered. Before you lay some cash down and yell at me. I'm not sure if 356 barrels are to be had.
