Casting for Cowboy loads 45 long Colt

I cast round balls and R E A L bullets for my muzzle loaders. I would like to cast some 45 bullets to reload for my uberti colt clone. I see that Lee has a mould for the 45 at 255 grains,what are your thoughts on it and what type of lead. Is the regular old soft lead I use in my front stuffers OK or do I need some thing else? Any and all help will be appreciated.

Yes that should do fine at the velocities you should be pushing it in a Colt Clone. If using BP as propellent tho you might find you can't put enough lube on that particular bullet. If using smokeless powder it will do fine.

Good bullet for Colts, inexpensive mould and easy to cast with.  So easy to cast with I can run the 6 holer with a ladel and still have very good boolits.  It will do ok for black powder from a revolver but runs out of lube in the rifle in my experience.  For 9# of pure lead, I'd suggest at least 1 1# roll of 50/50 soulder if for no other reason than the better fill of the cavities, it will increase the hardness of the bullet a bit and help eliminate any leading problems.

Do these bullets need to be lubed, if you are using smokeless powder?

Yes cast bullets MUST be lubed no matter what propellant you use. Lee offers a simple little kit and liquid lube that will do but it's far better if you are going to cast bullets to get a luber-sizer to both lube and size your cast bullets. It adds greatly to the cost tho. RCBS makes one of the better ones and I prefer it to the Lyman product.

The Lee push thru unit sizes your bullets and then you tumble then in the liquid lube to coat them. It's far more messy and time consuming but far cheaper as well.
