Considering a Howa 1500
« on: January 05, 2010, 12:33:48 PM »
I saw a new standard barrel 1500 today in .243.  It looks very impressive and the price is under $400.00.  Does anybody have any experience with Howa 1500's?

The new ones I have messed with are great.  I have the .204 in it and it shoots 0.5 with factory ammo, just started hand-loading for it so will see how that does.  I think it is the best buy for the money right now.  Am considering getting one in another caliber, myself.  I have been keeping an eye out for a new chambering.

I had a Howa/Hogue in 270.  It shot around moa with anything I put in it.  I would still have it but I gave it to my ex-girlfriend and her boys.  I would definetly recommend one.

The most accurate 7 mag I ever had was a Howa .  Had a Bell and Carlson stock on it and was easy on recoil.  Right now I have a Weatherby Vangard in 257 W, same basic action.  Get one and I don't think you will be disappointed.  DP

I've never owned a Howa 1500.  However, when I was a licensed guide out in California, quite a few of my clients from the southern part of the state used them.  There's a hunting / fishing chain down there that seems to have them on sale at least once a month, so it isn't suprising that some folks would see them as a decent value, and I think that accounted for why so many of my clients from the LA / Orange / San Diego county area used them.  Nobody I ever guided on a pig hunt who carried a Howa 1500 or Weatherby Vangaurd (pretty much the same thing) ever had an issue with them while in the field with me, and all of raved about the accuracy and seemed pleased with their choice.

I used to shoot with a guy who had a Howa 1500 in 7mm Remington Magnum that would deliver slightly sub-MOA groups with boring regularity.  I thought his rifle was a pretty impressive piece of work and a nicely fitted and finished one, with a decent piece of walnut for the stock to boot.

So, to the OP, while I would probably never buy one (no need -my Savage 10 is currently gettin' 'er done for me just fine), I would certainly consider a Howa 1500 or Weatherby Vangaurd if I were in the market.

I've got three and haven't had any problems with any of them. They are very accurate and seem to be well made. They are a little heavier than some but that isn't a problem for me. I think they are a good value.

At 73 years young I had never seen one until I traded for a 22-250 SS heavy varminter. It has shown great promise shooting factory Remington, It has really shown great accuracy of less than 1" at 100 yards. I suspect it should even do better with reloads. I really like the feel of the 1500 and the construction is very good I think you will be happy I think you did good. Good Luck Lou
