Sling swivel stud for 10" Contender forend?
« on: December 08, 2008, 07:00:23 AM »
(Be gentle--this is my first post on this site)
I have an original Contender with a couple of 14" barrels (.44 and .223) and just recently acquired a 10" .357.  Is there an easy way to attach the sling from my first setup to that shorter forend of the 10" (is there a replacement forend screw with a sling swivel stud)?

Welcome aboard.  We are normally gentle with new posters.  We wait to irritate each other until we know them.

I got my forend screws from Uncle Mike's years ago.  I hear they are hard to get now, but someone not long ago posted an alternate source.  It may have been TC accesories from their web page.  I hoe someone posts that information again.

I had to shorten the screws I got so they fit right, and you may have to taylor them to your forend.

Good luck, and come back often.

I have always done mine a little different.  I get a swivel stud with the machine screw thread on the back.  Then drill a small hole through the forearm.  Use a forstner bit (flat bottom drill bit) the size of the swivel stud base to make a small flat spot on the outside of the forearm for the swivel to sit in.  Then from the inside of the forearm use a forstner bit to drill a flat bottom hole big enough for a nut that fits on the swivel to sit deep enough to be below the barrel channel.  Then use a drill bit the size of the stud to enlarge the through hole.  Attach the swivel stud through the forearm with a nut on the inside.

Sounds like a lot of work, but the stud is attached and will stay attached and does not need to be removed to take the forearm off.  I would much rather use a screwdriver when taking the forearm off rather than finding something to stick in the swivel hole or twisting the sling around itself if still attached.

Yep, I'm with Bullseye, and he's right it's not that much work.  Even easier on a synthetic forend.  Uncle Mike does not make a band that will fit the 10" bull(that isn't a bull) barrel.  The replacement screw/stud does work...it will also rip a nice hole in a sand bag.  GOOD SHOOTIN', Walt   :)

BTW Welcome Aboard.  Like Keith said we take it easy until we know ya.  What he didnt tell ya was we feel like we know ya by the second post.  :D :D

Keith,  I think I was the one who said I got my sling kit from Fox Ridge Outfitters(I haven't seen a catalog from them in ages).  I believe somebody else mentioned E A Brown.

I mounted one on a synthetic forend by drilling a hole the size of the stud on the underside of the stock and then a bigger hole from the inside about half the way through. screwed the stud in and fill the inside with epoxy putty. Once that was set up the stud would screw out if needed but was very stable.

My synthetic forends are hollow.  I just drilled a hole for the screw.  Put a lock washer and tap on the inside and went Shootin'.  Walt  ;)
