Looking for a new camping destination idea
« on: September 30, 2008, 07:35:55 AM »
Hi -

I go camping with some friends of mine from college every year. We try to shake up the locations every year, but it doesn't always happen. I'm looking for a new location. We generally have three qualifications for a destination:

1) It has to be remote/isolated (no car camping! No RV hookups!)
2) Preferably by a large body of water, somewhere with good fishing a big +++
3) Within sane driving distance of NY state (I am from Northern NJ, my friends are from the Albany NY area)

This past summer we went to Isle au Haut, Acadia Nat'l Park, ME. It was PERFECT! A week of escape from noise and bustle and people. It was a 30-40 min ferry ride from the mainland to the island, then a 5 mile hike to the campsite. We didn't see another human for 3 days until someone else showed up at one of the other lean-tos. It was a 7-8 hour drive; long - but not totally ridiculous. In the past I have gone to Libby Camps up by Presque Isle ME. That's a 12-hr drive for me, and while the camping is good, the fishing never justified the very long drive. We've also been to some various locations in upstate NY as well.

(If you can drive to the campsite, its not automatically ruled out; Libby Camps allows you to drive in. By car camping I mean one of those places like North Lake in NY State where it's just basically a little parking space with a fire ring where you're gonna have neighbors all week)

So... anyone have any suggestions for a camping destination that meets these qualifications? National Parks are always good, but it doesn't have to be in a Nat'l Park. Basically, as long as we won't get arrested for being there, it's good. For some reason, I was leaning towards trying to find a location in Pennsylvania this year.
