Lease fees
« on: September 28, 2008, 12:22:11 PM »
I finally scraped up enough cash to pay my lease fees this year, @ $13.95 an acre...I'm old enough to remember the days when all I had to do was knock on the land owners door and ask permission to hunt, and offer him some of my time and services as well as some of my harvest in return. A nice Christmas present wasn't out of the question, either....

I think those days are long gone.  Hunting is becoming a business like it is in Texas.  I'm from Ga and the leases have really went up.   The last year I was there they went from 5 dollars an  acre to 10 dollars an  acre. That was for 13,000 acres.  They clear cut about about 5,000 acres and select cut about that much(which I love).  I just wish they would have waited until deer season was finished.  They  actually cut timber the day after Thanksgiving.  That was the same year GA lost 10% of people that bought licenses.  I wonder why?

A few more years of leases, licenses and hunting fees heading towards the unknown and I expect to see even a bigger decrease in the number of hunters participating in the sport. We are falling farther behind as each year passes on gaining new hunters.

The prices have become astronomical. I tried a club once, then the price kept going up. It was finally bought out by the Dr. and Lawyer members that didn't want to hunt with us riff raff. A few years back I just took the plunge and bought my own homestead with prime hunting land. The money from the row crops and livestock  have paid for 3/4 of it. Lord willing, it will be paid off next fall.
