Yes, it is a huge improvement over the black plastic stocked Vanguard.  It is a Bell and Carlson Medalist stock and is available in many colors for ~$230.

=I held one at my local walmart, Trigger needs work and the stock was not what I expect out of Weatherby. Neither was the blueing. I tend to try not to buy guns from Walmart because they don't seem to be the best fit and finish and the person at the register knows nothing about guns.

Speaking of Walmart - buying a firearm from them is a concern as the last I read -  http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/24114145/  -- they now video tape  firearms transactions and keep them with records in a "special" file. In addition it is my understanding if there is ever a firearms trace on the firearm you bought - such as it was stolen, recovered and police are trying to find owner - you are blacklisted form ever buying a firearm from Walmart again.

Had one hated it much prefer the black plastic stock. I don't like anything made by Bell and Carlson. If a rifle has a stock made by them that pretty much rules out me ever buying one.

Wal-Mart video tapes almost everything that happens at every register in the store.  I know, I spent 7 years working for them.  They also have video camera's at all of the high dollar merchandise or high theft items in the store.  High dollar is anything over $100 or thereabouts.

All FFL holders have to keep their records in a "special file"....it's called a logbook.   ;)  They have to keep the records for 25 years, or if they decide to stop dealing, they have to forward all of the files to the ATF immediately.

As for the trace, unless the FBI tells them about one while doing the NICS check, or the police contact them, they have no way to know about it.   ???  I still have many friends who work for Wal-Mart as managers, and I called one of them, and he doesn't know anything about blacklisting....

Bell and Carlson makes almost all of the factory composite stocks that aren't plastic.....  they are the OEM supplier for Remington (except for the M24 system and police rifles), Weatherby, Winchester, Browning......

I'm positive that the only Vanguards that have B&C stocks are the MOA series, and they aren't the Medalist stocks with bedding blocks, they are the regular Carbelite stocks that have been pillar bedded.  The one at Walmart is a plastic stock that's been painted with the textured spiderweb finish.  Same stock that's on the Varmint Special (not the MOA version).  They are a HUGE improvement over the Butler Creek plastic stocks that used to come on them.

I have one in 30-06.  It's a little heavy but shoots MOA--as established by both the target that came with the rifle and my own shooting. The rifle I bought was purchased by Wal-Mart before the MOA promotion.  The fact that a lot of the tan rifles shoot that well probably inspired the MOA promotion.  If you go to the Weatherby site you will see that the new non-MOA Vanguards now have a different stock.  Only the MOA rifles sport the tan and  black stock.

All of that said, anybody have a suggestion on where I can buy a wood stock?

Any stock that fits a Howa 1500 will fit it.
