The Flu Buck
« on: November 21, 2008, 10:45:26 AM »
I had been sick for a day and a half, spent 20+ hrs in bed, and the prettiest day of the wk was upon us. So at 2:35 I slipped into the new box stand overlooking some wheat. I settled in, getting my gear set up and made a few light grunts on the tube.

Within 5 minutes a doe appeared to my left, less than a hundred yds away, feeding in the wheat sprouts. I figured her to be a good decoy, but also figured that if she was still out there just before dark, which was 2-1/2 hrs away yet, I might just fill my doe tag.

Well, not 15 minutes later a good buck came into the field from the same route the doe had traveled. He was at a brisk walk coming in my direction and never paying attention to the doe at first. I thought he might just walk to me, so I readied the Encore in 7mm-08.

Then he stopped as he was even with the doe, about 75 yds out, and stared  right at me, even though I knew he couldn't see me in the blind nor smell me due to the wind direction. I had to wait a minute for him to look away in order to move my pistol and clear a tree before I could take a shot.

This was the first time in years that I remember getting a little shakey, I thought that was pretty cool. But I settled down properly for the shot as he turned with an outstretched neck toward the doe.

At the shot, he ran about 30-40 yds and piled up. This was at 3:02. You just never know when you might experience some action and I hadn't anticipated any really for at least another hour.

Con Grats!  Good looking buck.
What did you hit him with?
Please no wise Arse answers like I would give:
A bullet duh!
My Pistol, it's in the picture.
I am new to the T/C thing and was wondering what Caliber and load you used.

I would guess it was a 7MM-08

Nice set of coat hooks there!  Way to go!  I hope the flu went away at the sound of the shot.

Yes Sir, That'll make the Flu go away.  Nice going....pretty buck!!  If one like that won't give you a little case of the shakes it's time to quit.  I know I still get'em just as much as I did 40 years ago...well almost anyway...maybe I handle them a little better now.  I put a couple in the cooler with the ol' Encore muzzle loader, now I need to Contenderize one.  GOOD SHOOTIN'(and I ain't kiddin') Walt  :D

Two years ago, I got out of my truck to go to my stand and a buck walks onto the trail about 20 yds away totally oblivious to me, I put a shell in and shot.  I was hunting with a slug gun, as the deer had been coming out late and my scope couldn't get enough light.  I was home 2 hrs later and my wife wanted to know why, I told her you're only allowed 1 deer per day.  He was just a 3 by 3, but it's usually a long walk to the stand and a long wait to even see the deer.  Congrats on your early riser buck.

Thanks fellas.  Yeah, it was an Encore in 7mm-08 with 140 gr. Remington Core-Lokt's. I'm feeling much better, too. :)  Hunted several more days since last Wed. but haven't seen another deer yet. Our regular firearms season will end tomorrow, hopefully I can fill another tag.
