Floating the barrel
« on: October 26, 2008, 06:10:21 AM »
What is the best way to float the barrel of an encore. We have 2 Encores and I'm not proud of the way either of them shoot, was wondering if floating would make a difference?
Thanks
David

The easy way is to use rubber O-rings around the screws that hold the forearm to the barrel.  Lots of people do that.  On Contenders I  have used brass pins placed near the screws to float the barrel.  On most barrels I saw no real difference.  YMMV.

If your really going to float the barrel the only contack will be between the end of barrel studs and and the stock. I have inladed a flat piece of steel into the barrel channel of the forearm so I could mount the forearm tight and still have it free floated.

Catfish, can you elaborate a bit, and maybe include some pics?  I'm not understanding what it is you are doing with your Encore.

Try a thin piece of plastic, like a credit card, cut into a thin strip to go sideways in the barrel channel with a screw hole drilled in it. This will float the barrel. This has been done for yrs with mixed results.

I cut up spent 12ga shotgun shells...already have the curvature to them...work great.  Some barrels show great improvement, some a little, some none, but that seems to be the nature of firearms.  GOOD SHOOTIN', Walt  ;)

I'm having the float issues too and wondered if anyone has ever found or used longer forearm screws?  You need about 1/16 inch of clearance to achieve a free float and that is just about the length of the standard screws.

I use a hanger bar from Stratton Custom.  I believe he will also alter your forearm to fit the bar or sell one to fit it.  I bought my forearm from Virgin Valley when they were in business.  I still buy the hangar bars from Stratton when I get a new barrel.  http://www.strattoncustom.com/pages-main/category-7/forend-hanger-bars.html?zenid=62ca58d1862274155cde1379a87b9d81
