Illinois/Eastern Iowa/Southern Wisconsin hogs
« on: January 13, 2008, 05:15:51 AM »
I keep hearing there may be hogs in Southern Illinois but no one seems to know where. Same goes for Eastern Iowa and Southern Wisconsin, seems there may be a few loose hogs around but not sure any are on public grounds in those areas. Anyone with info willing to share on these areas? Looking to bag a smaller hog for the freezer, got my deer and pheasants stocked up already so looking to diversify! Living in Central Illinois gets pretty boring after the Holidays and most of the hunting season expires.

Now to remedy the lull till spring turkey and next deer season i am going to do some small game and yote hunting after late season anterless hunt. I did hear that there were a few outfitters for hog hunting in IL but notg anything in southern IL these were eastern i have a post about this under hog hunting forum.

Live in Morton near Peoria. Just went Coyote hunting in Mason county today. They don't have the late season for Deer so figured it would be fine! Got nothing! Minus 3 degrees this morning with a nice 10MPH breeze makes for ice in the mustache. Hope to do more Coyote hunting until Spring when Turkey comes around. Would love to do a real fair chase hog hunt. Really looking for meat, not a trophy so if it looks like it just came off the farm so be it. Sounds like Texas or Florida are the good places for hog hunting.

I will be doing some yote hunting and that along with some fishing well snagging anyway. There are alot of places to go hog hunting my ex BIL always went to arkansas every yr for hunting not sure of the cost. I have also heard that TN is pretty good to even some places up north would be  good. I should be out deer hunting but to cold and windy right now.

Got a nephew who lived near Macomb and had plenty of coyotes around. Never heard of any hogs in Illinois? I live in Pontiac.

There were some feral hogs west of Smithfield along the spoon river.Story was that a guy who lived on the south side of the river was going to start a hunting club with hogs, and the river went down so the hogs crossed over.Talked to a farmer who was retiring  from farming in that area and he told me he had as many as forty hogs around his cattle when he went to feed.I don't know if you could get on to hunt, but usually the hogs cause so much damage they are glad to get rid of them. That area is pretty rough ground, full of big hills and hallows.

JBlk, did the guy you speak of ever book hog hunts? I had one buddy (from Streator)that bought a hunt for one of his employees for Christmas and another(from Havana) who actually took a hog(booked and took) in that area.

SB, I am sorry to be so late in responding to your message. The fellow that I talked to was retiring from farming and I attended his auction sale.He said that there we so many hogs around his cattle operation that he was afraid to send his grandson out to feed.If I get down in that area I will stop at the house and see if a guy can get on the property to hunt.

Did you ever find out about the hogs by spoon river. If you don't mind let me know. I would love to try for one. Notice I said 'try'.
Thanks.
