New to Rochester, MN

Hello all,

Just moved out here from Western Michigan...I am looking for a place to hunt deer and possibly turkey in the future.  I have hunted both archery and firearm in Michigan, but am having a hard time finding the land that doesn't have a hunter every 10 yds or so.  Any suggestions, contacts or information would be awesome.

I haven't hunted over there but the White Water area is open to hunting. Get a good map and be willing to do some walking. There are some places to hunt in Forestville State park. get a map of the park at the ranger station. There are TONS of turkeys over there and some real fine deer, lots of coyotes too. Most of the land SE of Rochester is state forest, BUT, it's mostly private land. never hurts to ask permission and with bowhunting they might be more inclined to let you hunt.

there used to be a sportsmans club in Chester. That might be a good place to start. There was also a traditional archery shop called the footed shaft that might help.

There is the Rochester Archery Club they have a website.  The MN DNR of course.  Yea have to put in for turkey do so before Jan 9th, 2009.  Its by hunting area and 5 day season. Most likley you will need to build a preference point or two before yea get a permint.  I'm getting a turkey permit about every two years in the area I hunt.  Get MAPS!! of your area and look em over real good.  I think the PRIM (public recreation information maps) are still being published from the DNR.  Get the Rochester, Caledonia, Austin, Fairbault, Metro Area-South and you should be covered.  Find a likely spot and then get topos. Good Topos at Lattitudes Map and Travel Store in St. Louis Park, MN in the Cities.  Since you've just arrived you've got plenty of time to do your homework for next deer season.  Good Luck!

You might want to check over Lanesboro way as well. I know there used to be awesome squirrel hunting over there
