hand operated ratchet cable come along
« on: October 09, 2008, 05:03:22 AM »
If I bought one and stuck it in my truck could it be strong enough to unstick my truck if I had a near enough tree?

Though taken from established manufacturers' sources and presumed to be safe please do not use any load that I have posted. Please reference Hogdon, Lyman, Speer and others as a source of data for your own use.

Only if by stuck you mean spinning your tires on top of a slick surface. Add any kind mire factor at all and you midas well throw it under the tires for traction.

You need a chain hoist or a geared down hand ratchet come along

Well it sure would not hurt to have it along,I have used one of those several times to get unstuck. Throw in a couple of long chains as well to get some reach. And leave it rigged through the pulley as well as that gives you double the pulling power, which is barely enough sometimes.Krochus is right though,if you are in it axle deep, the come along might not help all that much. I wouldn't give up though you might try it anyway, sure beats walking 30 miles.

A whole lotta folks have gotten unstuck with one. Do be sure tho to get one of the heaiver duty ones not a light duty one. I seem to recall mine has a two ton rating. That's a lot of pulling power really. I've not seen mine in so many years I have no clue where it is but then these days I don't go places I might get stuck. I have used it a lot over the years tho. Another thing you should get is a high lift jack.

How stuck? and how big of a truck? that be the question , and yes most I have seen are of a 2 ton rating and have very little cable , you'll want something to give to extra length "chain/straps/etc" I am a HUGE fan of tire chains , now if you are swamped up to the axle in a mud hole it may be hard to put them on , but some tires chains will help you get to places you have no business being.

Like GB stated, if you get one heavy enough, you can winch your truck out of a creek bottom with it. I've seen industrial cable winches that can lift 6,000 lbs. Put wheels on that 6,000 lbs and you greatly reduce the load. Lug-All makes a good one. Many of the others are toys.

I keep one in my truck its a 4ton with a snatch block 2 tons without the block has pulled many a fullsize truck out that was stuck in ruts where the tires wouldnt touch. be sure to get plenty of tow straps or chains at least 100' never fails when you get stuck there is no tree big enough to gab with just one strap.

Don't underestimate the power and capability of a good come-along, I've used mine more than a couple times to get out of some bad stucks, this one comes to mind first off....we'd been setting deer/elk camp in the same spot for a couple years, this particular year we got several inches of snow dumped on us, great for hunting, but bad for soggy ground when it warmed up, Dad got his Jeep stuck in camp, I tried to pull him out with my ARB locked Cherokee and promptly stuck myself, the 3-ton come-along unstuck both of us!  ;)
