Big 5 sporting goods has a short barell shotgun with peep sights.  Does anybody know about it?

Is that all you know of it? No info on brand at least? There are no Big 5 stores around here none in the entire state so far as I know but for sure none close enough to me to have ever seen one.

I did'nt catch the brand, caus I was traveling durring CHRISTmas and noticed it then.  It was an all black pump, short barell with a protected rear sight and very tough looking.  I'm afraid it might be imported.

Mossberg makes one pretty similar to what you mention but then so do lots of other folks. With no more info than you provide it's gonna be pretty much impossible to identify the specific gun you saw. Did it look like either of these?

I've been thinking seriously about picking up one of these for myself.

It's the 590 Special Purpose 9 shot 12 ga. 20" special heavy-walled barrel with matte blue finish, black synthetic stock and ghost ring sights.

I saw one just like it but with the heat shield installed for sale at a shop but the guy I was dealing with kinda pissed me off so I won't be doing business there anymore. Here is one with the heat shield but set up differently.

Those Mossbergs are what I should be looking for.  I just came back from a local Big 5 and what I saw was an Interstate Hawk 982.  Does not Remington have a similar model?

Remington's site is kinda messed up in that most all their gun images require two URLs to see the entire gun and I've never been able to make them come out properly. This shows most of one similar to the first Mossberg.

and they have this one:

and these two:
