See? still thinkin' CAS.

I'd like to throw this out to the group and get some opinions...

Last week I came across an original '73 in pretty rough shape. Big splinter missing from the foreguard, wood beat to heck, no blue, pitted in a few spots, missing dust cover, kinda been through the mill but still shootable. The guy wanted 700 for it. This thing keeps naggin' at me. Do ya think I missed a deal? It might not be too late. :?

Doesn't sound like a deal to me. "Still Shootable" is a real general statement, What's the bore look like, Strong rifling?, Does the Rifling Go all the way to the muzzel? & etc. Don't forget these guns are black powder and a poor bore gets really poor after a few shots of Bp and the resulting fouling. Action: There is head space to worry about, does the lever snap back up? For another 3 hundred you can get a pretty nice one, not great but very good.

My Shooter cost 900.00, it's a factory short rifle with almost excellant wood, very good action and bore-(has some pitting but scattered), all brown patina with light and scattered pitting but it looks good and everything is there and working.

I'd wait for the right gun/deal..

Thats a big help. I've only seen real collector pieces for big $. I can relax now and quit wonderin if I'm gonna kick myself later for missin' "the deal". Whew!

If you are interested in a shooter, take a look @ gunbroker.com and Auctionarms.com, while they have some nice collector ones sometimes, many are somewhat altered which ruins the colector value and (should) lower the price. I picked up one of the nicest 73's I've seen-(with-in reason)-on Gunbroker. Standard 24" gun in 38-40, excellant everything, I mean really tight, only someone cut the bbl. back to 23" and the mag tube 22" and that destoys the value. The bore shines like a mirror, even the screws appeared un- turned, and it just plain shoots great. Cost was about what folks pay for a new Uberti and I'd rather have the winnie, even with it's odd mag tube. Wait awhile, deals are out there, but so are theives....take it slow

I haven't seen (felt) that #10, cast iron skillet since she discovered teflon coated pans, and thank god they are made of aluminum-doesn't do as much damage... :-D
