9 mm Reloads
« on: November 29, 2008, 02:12:04 PM »
I have loaded a lot in the past but never for the 9 MM.   My son was given several hundred empty Winchester cases.   When using 115 grain lead cast bullets, what is a good loading to start with?   Also what is a good loading for the 147 grain hard cast, what is a good load to use?

Thank you for your help!

I have loaded and shot the 115 grain bullets in 9mmLuger.  The two loads I used were with FMJ bullets and either 4.8 grains of Alliant's BullsEye or 6.0 grains of PowerPistol.  The PowerPistol load was slightly better, in that this is a slower powder and worked the action smoother and showed a little better accuracy.  Both loads were very good.

I made up a bunch of the 147 using the LYMAN 49th it says 2.5 to 2.8 of titegroup. Modern reloading (for the 115)second edition says 4.4 to 4.9 accurate #2. I loaded a bunch of the 120 using lyman again. 3.2 to 3.8 titegroup. I used the lyman because it had the data for the titegroup powder i am using. I have been using suters choice cast and have been pleased.

The October Handloader Magazine had an article about cast bullets in the 9mm - you might check it out.  He used Win brass and there were loads for a 145-6 gr cast and 122-126 gr cast. As well as several other weights. Should be worth a look too. And if you have access to Ken Water's pet loads, I think he did several articles on the 9mm though his info might be getting a bit dated. He offered some tips on taper crimping and a few other items that might be helpful as well regarding cast bullets in the 9mm.
