Has anyone took a deer yet
« on: December 01, 2008, 04:23:06 PM »
I just concluded the first week of Gun season here in Oklahoma. My youngest son took a 8 point 124lbs opening day afternoon and I took almost an identical buck that weighed 120lbs the following morning. His was at 80 yards with my Win 94 in .30-30 170grn silver tip, two steps and down. Mine was at 65 yards with a model 92 in .45 long colt 265grn Cor-bon, 30 yards and down. Have passed on several does until the oldest son and my dad tag out.
Deer hunting is mostly fun then you shoot one and it turns to work.

I got a 8 point only my second Whitetail ever. Being from Utah I met a guy from Missouri about 9 years ago who invited me out to hunt his farm. 1500 miles one way I went last year and again this year I'm hooked. I see 150 class bucks both years but spend 5 days bow hunting and 3 days rifle. I'll keep going back thinking of muzzel loader next year. It's allot more fun than chasing mule deer here in Utah. Picture of this years deer Pro Hunter 270 win 80 yards last day before I had to leave.

No deer yet. Muzzle loader season is on now. I will be doing that the rest of the week, wish me luck, the deer numbers are down. :(

I killed a doe a few weeks ago with my muzzle loader. Gun season has just ended and it was very slow.

Nope, skunked this year. I had a shot  on the biggest deer I have ever seen alive in the woods and a branch jumped out and deflected the arrow. >:(

Grimjim, I hate that for you, honestly. But at least I know now that Jumping Branch trees aren't just native to East Tn. ;)

Don't get me wrong I love bow hunting mule deer it's just Utah has screwed things up. Years ago they did away with three point or better areas and turned most the state into draw only. This is for $ reasons only they could care less about wildlife. This leaves open areas so crowded you would be better off hunting morons on four wheelers. Maybe I should look into Colorado did some work in Meeker, Rifle and Craig and was amazed at the Bucks I would see.

I took a 134 pound doe in early muzzleloading season back in october in the first five minutes of season.  I hunt with a sidekick 50 caliber.  I have not seen much during rifle season and it closes this weekend.  Then we have another week of muzzleloading.  Best of luck to all

Bow season goes until mid January but is antlerless after the first of the year. We have two more antlerless gun hunts the last two weekends of December. With the wild hogs we butcher we only eat three deer a year and that is with some left in the freezer to be rotated to the top. I may hunt but would rather the kids or my dad get the next one and if they get two I will make a lot of chili for friends at the rallies in the Spring and Fall. We fed chili to over thirty at Sparks America this fall.

I got 2 in the freezer so far, way behind this year since we're a month and a half into the gun season.  I try to put a fawn and 3 does down and then just hunt for fun but I been sick as heck since the first of November.  Oh well, I've got another month and a half left.  Trouble is after this weekend I can't go the next 2 weekends!   :'(

This weekend will be the family hunt, meet, hunt, eat, lie to each other alot and if a deer happens along we might shoot it. I've got a new 12 ga. H&R Ultra Slug hunter that I have only hunted with once so I'll take it this weekend. Tack driving slug gun at 75 yards.

Skunked so far, but I'm heading to southern Illinois for muzzleloader. I get to hunt on private land for that and hopefully I'll come back with something.

I got a doe with my old recurve bow during archery season.
An 8-pointer (see avatar), a good sized doe and a button buck with my H&R Handi-Rifle during our 13 day firearms season.
I've got one tag left so maybe during our muzzleloader season I can tag out.

GOOD SHOOTING!

I got a 125 lbs spike buck this morning with my stainless Ruger .338 Federal. I was olny hunting for meat and was going to let him pass, but he stopped 80 yards out for a perfect quartering away shot. so I took it.

My oldest son always asks me Dad how come you tell people you are only meat hunting if you get a forkhorn but you were waiting on a trophy when you get a bigun. I used to always tag out on opening morning whether it was a big or little, usually the first to come by. I just luv to hunt carrying a gun in the woods. If I get to build a fire and cook for someone it's only better. The best trophy I ever saw was the 65 pound button buck my 82 year old dad shot for his first deer ever.
