For the Contender any of the .30 cals based on the 444 case.  I've only had and used one, excellent power and trajectory, ballistic tips function well in this caliber.

My favorite is the .309JDJ.  58 Whitetail deer with this one alone and I hope to top 60 before hunting season is over.

For ranges above 200 yards, the 300 Weatherby Magnum because it shoots flat, has mild recoil and has plenty of power.

For ranges up to 200 yards, the 460 S&W Magnum because it has plenty of power, shoots flat enough and has mild recoil.

I really like my 338JDJ #2  and am starting to see the 30/30AI has alot of potential. Really can't see much the 338 won't kill in the lower 48.

bluecow,
I would recomand an Encore instead of the Contender. With the larger frame you can not only shoot anything the the Contender will shoot, but you can also shoot the 60,000 psi round that the Contender will not handle. I have both, but if could only have 1 it would be an Encore.

Wow! hard to say really. For years it was my 309 JDJ. Then I got my 338. I have killed everything around my part of the country (TN) that can be killed. Also a couple pronghorns. I love the recoil of those 225's. The last couple of years I have been shooting the 257JDJ and let me tell ya it kills way out of proportion to its size. Almost no recoil, consistant sub-moa. Then along comes my 6mmBR......I'm not even gonna get into the love affair I think I could have with this thing. .........

OH ALRIGHT!!!!!! 309JDJ
I almost felt if I was cheating on her, talking about those others like that.

For a long time it was the .30Herret...then along came the 6.5JDJ....and then the .309JDJ....then for some reason I had to add in the 30/30AI....OK,OK, just one....dad gone this is tough....common sense says the .309, but it was "medium" game...I'm going with the 6.5.                GOOD SHOOTIN',  Walt  ;)

I can't pick just one. I like them all that I have.  510 GNR, 410 GNR, 475 Linebaugh, 308 Win, 375 H&H.  Yea these are all handgun barrels.

I like my 6.5x55. Very accurate, moderate recoil.

.300 Savage.  My medium/big game hunting consists mainly of northern Whitetail deer at ranges that would seldom exceed 100 yards with a 300 yard shot being pretty much the maximum.  The .300 is a time proven deer round that gives up very little to the vaunted .308.

I have a few, what I use depends on what and where and how the conditions are. For medium/big game those rounds include the .250 AIRLN, 6.5x57 AIR, 7BRM, .308,  and the .30-06 at present. I get bored and change more often than need be.

due to current hunting laws I cant use bottle necked cartridges, I use a  44 mag or a 45 colt barrel and shoot both equally well. The 44 is on a contender and the 45 is on a encore. I generally carry the contender more due to it's lighter weight.

My 375 JDJ comes to mind.  There is nothing on this planet that I can't take down.
