357 Handi and Deer

I've been doing a bit of trading lately and have nearly taded all my so-called "deer caliber" Handi barrels.  I still have the 357 mag.  Has anyone got any experience shooting whitetails with the 357 Handi?  I was thinking the new Leverevolution ammo might be just the trick.  Any feedback is appreciated.

Well, I remember a post as well...dammed if I can find it.... :-[ >:(

Anyhow, I recommend the med weight bullets from the rifle. Specifically the Hornady 158XTP FP bullet is a god send for the 357 rifle shooter!!  You will get more velocities and be able to relyably expand the heavier 357 bullets. The 180 HP's are a possibility, but I prefer the 158'160 range myself. One important thing... Stay away from the HP bullets for all but the 180's as they will expand violently and may well under penetrate.

I shot a couple deer with my Colt Whitetail-er 8" revolver and the 140gr Speer. It worked well enough, but never killed with authority. if you know what I mean. I even shot one with a 1911 and 230 Hydro shok's. It was really close so I tried it, it worked. At the shot she jumped and ran about 75 yards and dropped. the shot was at about 10 yards thru the heart/lungs. Thru and thru penetration.

I think diffrent than CW I use 180 gr hardcast and punch a hole clean thru'em no expansion to speak of and I've never recovered a bullet. I have recovered a few deer thet way. ;)  I haven't tried the hornady rounds but they seem to be working well for other folks.

 Good point Bob!! For some reason I don't ever think about hard cast solids for anything but the 45's. But, your correct, load them stiff, and penetration should not be an issue. I would choose a bullet with a good sized meplat and performance on game, should also be up to par!!

hang in with a heavy  lead or  jacked bullet 180 gr prefered and dont try to over reach the caliber and it will drop white tail anytime you hit them right , the 357mag is a good round for them

 dropped an 8-pointer with my .357 november 24th . it was about a 40 yard shot right behind the shoulder with MAG-TECH 158 grain SJSP's , this ammo shoots great in my gun out to 100 yards . the buck weighed 140 lbs ,it came out the right side of his ribs with about a quater sized exit wound, took out both lungs . he went about 50 yards .  ;)
