What can I make with this

Ok. I found this on the side of the road and thought I could make something out of it.


I was not sure of the wall thickness so I cut off the end. The bore is 5" with a wall thickness of 3/8" and is 32" long
I know it would need a powder chamber. Just fishing for Ideas

Hmmmm.

Thin walls + powder chamber = mortar or perhaps howizter.

Perhaps a liner for a fine piece of brass/bronze.  The ID is likely VERY smooth.

46oz Juice cans will be too small.

4" pvc pipe is 4.5" OD, but the connectors might be about right.

A mortar or Howitzer came to mind but I was thinking maybe something like this


That way I could have a nice thick powder chamber.

Here is one possability
The drawing is not to scale.
The blue area is a solid piece of 4140 with a 1.5 inch chamber
The red will be a seamless liner to reduce the bore too 4.5 inches (easer to find ammo)
The bore length will be just under two calibers.

Why don't you take a look the N-SSA drawings on breech plugs in liners and then build out from there.  You are very close to that right now.

Since you are already considering composite construction, consider shrink-fitting a couple of bands around the outside to make it look like a Coehorn.  This will also give you increased strength.

     Along with composite construction comes the responsibility to provide a continuous vent clear through all your layers to the powder charge.  This prevents high temp and pressure gas from leaking into the tiny spaces between the layers of your tube.  Most people use a plain ole' bolt, stainless or alloy steel to drill the vent in and then install in a drilled and threaded hole in the breech.

     Double D had an excellent sketch of just such a "Safety Vent", but I just can't find it tonight.  Looks good so far!  I know that you are very familiar with a linstock.  They are an excellent way to light mortars; you can keep your head away from the muzzle AND vent back blast!

Thanks for the advice here are a few adjustments, Looks like I have another project for my retirement next year.


Not a true cohorn but just a fun piece to play with

I extended the sleeve to completely cover the chamber area, and added bands and a vent tube. Looking less like a bomb more like a mortar. I'll use the Complete Cannoneer Like many have said in the past These pieces could still be around generations from now and we can't be sure what loads they will use so build them as strong as practicable.

You might move your vent down a ways so it will reach the charge even when there is not much powder in it.
