Wearing knives when on the road
« on: February 08, 2009, 04:46:36 PM »
What knives do yall carry when riding. I have several that I carry regularly some folders and some fixed blade. Usually I carry a Schrade folder similar to a Buck in a sideways belt sheath over my wallet on the left side. The way I make the sheath the knife stays in until I need it and is over my chaps belt. The other knives I carry when I feel like it. The one on the left is the OL's I made it and the other deerhorn handled ones. The butterfly knife is the only one I have found that was good enough for me to carry. I keep it in my jacket pocket as a spare. I made all the sheaths.
Deer hunting is mostly fun then you shoot one and it turns to work.

I carry a fixed blade in a crash resistant scabbard laced in the side lacing of my vest.  Since the vest is always our outer garmet it's never concealed and always accessable.

Coupla years ago, I hosted a bike rally here in Wisconsin  for a small group of folk(26) I met on a Harley Forum. One of the members from Korneyforney brought me one of these belt buckle knives as a gift. Good quality, easy access, nobody else knows it's a knife and it's always with me as long as I wear my bikin' belt.

kinda pricey, thank goodness I didn't have to pay for mine...................http://www.bucklehead.com/

I ALWAYS carry one or two Kershaw knives, excepting airports of course. I have a Blur and a Whirlwind. The Speedsafe opening is very fast.

I usually keep this bad boy with me.  It's a nerdy pocket knife, but the little flashlight does come in handy.

If I have some kind of work/hard use/camping type of use for a knife I keep this with me.

Dad raised me and the twin brother to never be without a knife and a piece of string when in the woods. If you are in the woods both will come handy at sometime or another. I also carry one of several pocket knives case, buck, schrade and camilius.

My Grandpa always had a Case knife with him.  Usually a stockman of some kind.  Every time I put my Case knife in my pocket it reminds me of him.  They're great and really hold an amazing edge.

No, but I'll get Kathie to take one.  If I don't post it in a couple of days remind me.  CRS and all that!

I meant to ask you about that. I am trying to work with kydex and that sounds like something I could look at.

Altlaw, Wear did you get your crash resistant scabbard at? I would be interested in getting something like that.

Actually, "crash resistant" is my own term.  I believe the Kydex deernhog was talking about is about the strongest stuff out there.  One thing for sure, if you come off the bike unexpectedly, you don't want the knife punching through the scabbard into your arm pit!

Just an inexpensive boot knife I picked up at a gunshow.  I'll get another picture.   :D   I like the small K-bar with a tanto blade but the dealer never had one with the Kydex scabbard.

Ok. Thanks. I will just have to keep my eyes open for one at the next gunshow. I am really looking forward to getting my new piece on the road as soon as possible and enjoying the ride. Thanks again Altlaw, for the picture. It has given me a great idea of how to carry a blade that's easy to get to yet, out of the way.

If you have an inexpensive leather sheath that is soft and floppy here is the cure. Go buy a box of canning parafin at the grocery and melt a couple of the blocks in the bottom of a long narrow pan like a bread loaf pan at low heat. When melted and hot (careful it will ignite if too hot) carefully dip the knife sheath in the parafin one side at a time and repeat atlest once more time. Let cool , rub the excess wax off, and the sheath is hard as a rock. I really advise to do this with Shrade Sharpfingers and the drop point styles they put out.

What kinda of knife is that

I checked last night and took a picture that I'll have to post from home.  The knife is marked Smith & Wesson with their logo.

If I have my pants on I have a pocketknife in the pocket. I don't like wearing a fixed blade when riding, weather it be a motorcycle or a horse. Fact is I rarely carry anything but a pocket knife when hunting. I can gut or skin a deer or elk with a good sharp pocket knife.

Sometimes I'll have a fixed blade or a hatchet in my pack. Regards

Have been thinking about a machette mounted on my front fork, far as what I carry on my person it is a buck folder in a belt sheath .
