help me fix a mistake

I used JB weld to apply a front sight to my .357.  Need to install a higher sight. How do I remove it?

I suggest shock.
 Put the barrel in a vice and wack the site with a drift and hammer, at the junction of the site and barrel. It should :pop: right off...

Thanks CW. I'll give it a try. JB weld says to heat to 600 degrees, or file and grind. I do not want to mess up the barrel.

If you need to heat it, 600 shouldn't mess it up to bad. You will likely see where it was but the bluing should survive. Just don't go too hot!!

Well, the aluminum sight base broke. The JB weld is still on the barrel. Guess I'll try the propane torch.

JB Weld can be some tuff stuff. I'm never ceased to be amazed by it. In 1976 I patched a set if 1965 Harley Davidson Sporster cases- that I thought were toast-right behind the rear cylnder. That motorcycle is still on the road today :) Good luck with your project.

The next front sight base  should say williams and have driftable sight blades

Heat it for a few seconds over the flame on your cook stove.
I've done this a couple of times to remove sights and it works well.
Just grab hold of the sight with pliers and it will come off.

STRONGLY suggest a 100 - 250 watt soldering iron - enough capacity to provide the heat and will applly it locally.  We do this all the time to remove parts bonded with a variety of adhesives (bearings, shafts and so forth) in manufacturing.

i would have suggested building up the front sight with jb weld and smoothing with a file , i've done this with some of my milsurps.

Cat Whisper, the soldering iron worked great.

Foggy, I agree. I used what I had on hand, was off by about 2 inches!
